ItØs all about winning (21.11.02)

“A WIN is a win, and I’ll take a one point win over an entertaining game every time,” is how Maidenhead RFC coach Tony Brooks viewed his side’s narrow 19-8 win over rivals Windsor on Saturday.
With Maids having been relegated into South West Division 2 East, Windsor will have been spurred on to take their normally more senior rivals down a peg or two. And, as Brooks explained, they gave it their best shot.
He said: “Windsor were very competitive and keen, I can understand that. They slowed us down well and stopped us from playing.
“To be fair they played quite well in the first quarter and deserved their first try.
“However, and this is what really pleased me about us, we didn’t panic. By the end we were well worth our win.”
Since shooting themselves in the foot at Abbey over a month ago, Maids have found some real form and confidence to put together three or four good wins.
And, as Brooks is at pains to point out, his brief is to bring home the points, however he can.
He commented: “I know Saturday’s game was a dour affair, but it was another two points.
“We are aspiring to play a more attactive style of rugby, but this is not always possible.”
He added: “The game today is all about variation, not sticking to one plan, whatever the situation. You have to think about it.”
The bonus for Brooks is that he has an experienced team, and he knows how well they can really perform.
“I have a lot of confidence in the players, and it’s all coming together well.”
To test the run of form the Braywick side have been enjoying recently will be visitors Dorchester tomorrow (Saturday), kick-off 2.30pm.
The Dorset side have only managed one win and a draw from eight starts, but Maids know that like the encounter with Windsor, this is a side that will scrap it out.
However Brooks is unconcerned about Dorchester preferring to concentrate on what his side can do.
“We will play to the best of our abilities and concentrate on what we do best. Another two points will suit me fine.”

After their postponed match on Saturday at Keynsham – the Bristol side’s pitch being waterlogged – Marlow entertain Reading tomorrow in what will be an interesting local derby.
The Berkshire side have found their form this season and are challenging for promotion back to the National Leagues.
