Injury crisis spreads to three-quarters (Story posted 06.12.01)

MAIDENHEAD coach Simon Edwards promised something different at Weston, following his side’s dismal showing against Stroud.
However, swopping a one-dimensional forwards game for a one-dimensional running game is probably not what everyone expected.
Edwards said: “They got a couple of lucky tries but they deserved their win. Let’s not forget they are the league leaders playing on their own park.
“They have a very good 10 and 12, probably the best I have seen this year, and together they orchestrated the game. They cut us to shreds three times, but other than that we played pretty well.
“The score flattered them.”
And, in truth, Maidenhead did give a good account of themselves for spells of the game, especially in light of their ever deepening injury crisis.
The regular props, Rene Dance and Allan Greene, are long-term doubtfuls, following shoulder and calf injuries, but it is the three-quarter line which now looks under pressure.
Edwards said: “It’s a disaster at the moment. Danny Walton won’t be fit for Saturday, Tony Young is doubtful, Eric Blewitt is away on business and Andy Barron has come home from Australia with a strained calf.”
Tomorrow (Saturday) Maids face second placed Cheltenham at Braywick, kick-off 2.30pm. And, even with serious selection problems, Edwards still believes the Braywick spirit could earn his side an unexpected win.
He said: “It’s a very, very important game for us. We are very focussed and we need to get a result.
“I think we can beat them and the boys are very much up for it.”
