Last chance saloon for gung-ho Maids (11.04.02)

MAIDENHEAD RFC have two lifelines remaining that might yet see them start next season as a South West Division 1 club.
If they can win well at Cheltenham tomorrow (Saturday), probably by over 35 points, and Keynsham lose at home to Chinnor, Maids will be safe for another year.
If the results go against them, they then need Dings Crusaders to win their play-off game, possibly against Basingstoke.
However this is all buts and maybes. All Maids can do is go to Cheltenham and win by as many points as possible, as coach Simon understands.
“Strangely enough the pressure’s off. It doesn’t matter if we lose because we can’t go any lower.
“What’s important is that we focus not just on winning, but winning well. We have to be positive.”
As for thier Gloucestershire opponents, Edwards is not certain how they approach this last contest of the season.
“Cheltenham have nothing to play for so I don’t really know what to expect from them. But it’s probably more about us, and what we do on the day.”
This is a mute points, as on Saturday Maids lost to Dings Crusaders 11-10 when had they played the way their coach wanted, the score could have been a lot different.
“I was very disappointed with the way we lost” said Edwards.
“The nerves and pressure got to us, and tactically it all went wrong.
We got into an intense battle up front, when we needed more width on the ball.”
He added: “We just weren’t thinking on our feet.”
“Dings weren’t that good. They have spent most of the season pinching wins.
“It was a game we could and should have won.”

IN CONTRAST, Marlow secured the South West Division 2 (East) title on Saturday and could be one of those that replaces Maids in Division 1.
