There are lies, damned lies... (03.01.03)

MAIDENHEAD RFC enter the second half of the season in third place in South West Division 2 East on points difference and on the back of seven successive wins.
However, far more revealing statistics underline how Maids have got themselves into such a position.
According to the informative grassroots rugby website www.rugbyroundup.com, Maids have, in total, scored 32 tries with 15 coming from their much-maligned backs.
This may be a surprise to some who complain that the vast majority of Maids’ tries come from the pack – this is not so. However the most effective scoring unit in the team – and incidentally in the league – is the back row which has collared 12 tries to date with Robin Bryant leading the way with six of his own.
Not surprisingly full-back Rob Hawkins is the division's leading kicker with 118 points from 26 penalties and 20 conversions, and well ahead of his nearest rival.
Interestingly of Maids’ rivals for the title, Oxford Harlequins have bagged 40 tries with a massive 33 coming from the backs, while Chippenham have 38 tries with 28 coming from outside the front eight.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Maids travel to Stow-on-the-Wold, kick-off 2.15pm, against a team that have grabbed just 19 tries all season, but of which 14 have come from their backs including six from their wingers.
A contrast in styles is expected.
