Prestigious cup run is curtailed (28.03.03)

London Irish 38, Maidenhead 5

MAIDENHEAD Colts’ impressive national cup run finally came to an end on Saturday in the quarter-final stage to a useful London Irish side.
The Irish’s forwards always seemed in control, and as a result Maids were never able to secure enough ball to show-off their match-winning back line.
Their only try of the game came just before half-time when a break from the base of the scrum by Max Evans was followed by quick ball from the forwards and then Dan Evans broke down the left before drawing the full-back to slip Sam Hocking in for a very good try.
This made the score at the break 19-5, and Maids were to concede another 19 points in the second half as the Irish rolled on.
However Maids enjoyed a couple of chances to score but when James Haskell and then Alex Greer broke through, they did not have the support to finish off the move.
The colts now have their Easter tour of Portugal and Spain to look forward to.
