Colts cap season with Berks Cup (Story posted 10.30am Thursday, May 2)

MAIDENHEAD Under 19 Colts rounded off a phenomenal season by beating Abbey 47-0 in the final of the Berkshire Cup at Braywick on Sunday.
The trophy joins the Bucks, Berks and Oxon Cup on the trophy shelf, in a season where the team also reached the semi-final of the National Cup where they lost to Bath.
Sunday's game opened with a couple of near misses, the first after a storming break from Tom Guest and the second after Mordt broke clear.
Maids were not to be denied however, and the opening score came when Guest picked up at the base of a five yard scrum and dragged three defenders over the line with him. Another Mordt break sent winger Bell clear but the pass was adjudged to have been forward.
Within minutes though Guest broke clear, shrugging off three tackles before scoring Maids’ second try.
For 10 minutes Maids seemed to be suffering from end of term blues and allowed themselves to be pinned down before a clever pass from Martin sent Ansell clear from 30 metres out to give Maids a 21-0 lead.
Quick ball from Edwards sent Mordt clear on another break but the centre was tackled five metres out.
Pedersen dived through the ensuing ruck to add another try and give Maids a 28-0 half-time advantage.
Pedersen was at it again soon after the restart, scoring from 20 metres out and moments later Hammond made a searing break from full-back before chipping through for Mordt to score under the posts.
It was perhaps fitting that Maids’ final try came from a 40 metre break by Guest who by some margin was the club's top scorer over the season.
This was the final game together for some of this side who will now go on to premiership rugby teams and university.
The club will hope that the camaraderie in this talented squad will persuade some of them to continue their careers with Maidenhead.
