Edwards: "Players now know what is required" (17.09.04)

COACH Simon Edwards issued a stark warning to his players after their 34-12 setback at Cinderford on Saturday.
He said: “The players have to realise what a step up in quality Division 1 is.
“I think they now know how hard they are going to have to work just to stand still at this level.
“Cindeford had done their homework on us. They watched us against Coney Hill and were ready. They were fired up.”
Conversely it was the lack of early passion from his side which most disappointed Edwards.
He said: “We gave them too much respect in the first 20 minutes. That’s where the game was lost.
“We have to be more aggressive, streetwise and clinical. I felt we went in with no real belief that we could win it.
“However, it was a game we needed, to give us a guide as to the standards required.
“I don’t think anyone will be in any doubt now.”
He added: “The step up from Division 2 East is massive. There’s no comparison.”
As part of his squad-building process Edwards has signed former Springbok under 19 second rower Dewet Voosen to give him another lineout jumper and bulk up the front five, which the coach believes needs improving.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Maids entertain National League side Barking in the Powergen Cup, kick-off 3pm.
Edwards said: “It’s a game I want to win. It’s a good game for us and gives us a further idea of how we are progressing.
“I’m looking forward to playing Westcombe Park or Lydney in the next round.”
Jacques Botha, Richie Craig and Rob Hawkins all have injury worries.
