Upbeat Edwards wants one against the head (03.12.04)

MAIDENHEAD go into tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) clash with Barn-storming Bridgwater looking to ‘take one against the head’.
Maids coach Simon Edwards has targeted the match as one Maids could nick – something he believes his side have to do against at least one of the top teams this season.
He said: “There is a gap between the top half and bottom half of this division – I think that’s obvious.
“It’s important for us to beat those teams around us, and then nick one or two against the higher placed teams.
“This is one of those matches. It’s a match we believe we can get something from.”
However, the Somerset team are in fine form at present, having averaged nearly 60 points per game in their last three matches, and come to Braywick as the league’s highest point scorers.
This is something Edwards is very aware of, saying: “They have the top try scoring back and forward in the league, and are powerful throughout.
“They are like we were in Division 2 last season. Strong, powerful and with plenty of bullets. They are capable of scoring from anywhere, and it’s going to be tough.”
He added: “They have a Tongan international and a Kiwi centre who are scoring freely.
“However, this is not a damage limitation exercise; there is no doom and gloom, despite not being able to field our full side.”
The injury worries were added to on Saturday when back Danny Martin lasted just three minutes, however, he may still play against Bridgwater.
Edwards said: “Danny is under consideration, but Simon Cripps, Alex Greer and Danny Walton are still missing.
“But we have a strong squad and the players coming in are experienced at this level.”
Most of these players were given a run out in a friendly against Reading Abbey on Saturday – a match Maids comfortably won 36-12.
Edwards said: “Their coach told me that we had taught them a lesson. It just goes to show you the difference in standard between Divisions 1 and 2.
