Maids "smash and grab" win (26.11.04)

MAIDENHEAD moved out of the bottom four for the first time this season after defeating St Mary’s Old Boys on Saturday with a dogged performance.
According to Maids coach Simon Edwards it was a job well done from his side.
He said: “The conditions were terrible. Sleet, snow and a heavy pitch all made it a tough game.
“But it was all about the two points. Get in, get the points and get out.
“So from that point of view I’m pleased.
“It was a sound performance after the previous week.”
Edwards was also sure that had the conditions been more favourable to running rugby, his side would have piled on the points.
He said: “St Mary’s were workmanlike and had periods of pressure, but we defended well.
“I’m particularly happy that we didn’t concede.
“However for the last 20 minutes it was all us, but the backs struggled in the conditions otherwise we would have scored more.
“It was so cold the backs couldn’t feel their hands by the end.”
Edwards was also impressed with the referee saying: “In the conditions he did a very good job. Both coaches agreed.”
The only negatives for the coach was that Danny Walton, playing at flanker, only lasted five minutes before tearing his hamstring, and the fact that Maids did not turn possession into points.
It’s something Edwards is aware will have to be improved upon before they host Bridgwater in two weeks.
He said: “We must now start performing at home, which has always been our strong suit. This must be addressed urgently.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) Maids have a friendly at Braywick with Reading Abbey, kick-off 12.30pm.
