Maids in mood to play attractive rugby

MAIDENHEAD’S 62-5 annihilation of Gloucester Old Boys on Saturday could be a taste of things to come according to coach Simon Edwards.
The Maids’ supremo is sure his team have worked themselves into a position where they can play the style of rugby which could threaten any team in the league.
Edwards said: “It was nice to score 62 points, although in truth it could have been 100.
“But what was pleasing was the reaction to what we did during the week, after losing to Keynsham.
“I was looking for a positive reaction and that’s what I got.”
He added: “We’re a good side, but with a number of young heads.
“However when we get it right we can destroy teams.”
But, it has not been a steady progression to fourth place for Maids, who started the campaign with four consecutive defeats.
Edwards was honest about this period, saying: “We had to reassess when we had lost four straight. We played a tighter, power game and became more difficult to beat.
“It was all about points.
“Now we’re safe from the drop, we can play a more open style of game.
“The type of game we wanted to play at the start of the season, we will now be able to play against the top three teams with no pressure on needing points.
“We can play our style and give them something to think about.”
Tomorrow (Saturday) Maids travel to rivals Cheltenham (kick-off 2.30pm) with revenge on their mind.
Earlier in the season, Maids controversially lost 8-7 at home with a number of decisions going against them.
However this time it’s Maids who are the form team and Cheltenham who are in a slump
Edwards said of the match: “It’s one we want to win to show why we deserve to be fourth.”
Cheltenham still need at least one win to be absolutely safe from relegation, which this season is expected to involve the bottom three teams.
