Maids focus on Berks Cup after league setback (15.04.05)

AFTER their nail-biting 32-24 defeat against Chinnor on Saturday, Maidenhead take a break from the league and turn to cup action.
With the 1sts enjoying a break, Maids will be fielding a largely 2nd team against old sparring partners Reading Abbey in the Berkshire Cup final on Sunday.
It’s a match which could provide some silverware to cap what has been a generally successful season, according to 1st team coach Simon Edwards.
He said: “It should be a good game. Against Abbey it’s always personal although the two clubs have no problem with each other.
“Both teams play a similar style so it should be interesting.”
He added: “Chad Miller has been manager/captain of the 2nds and done a great job. I’ve just helped where I can.
“The 2nds won the league with a win against Chinnor, and good wins over Windsor and Newbury Stages in the cup have shown how far we have come.
“Last year the 2nds wouldn’t have got through the 1st round.
“As a club we are moving in the right direction which is my aim. Win or lose on Sunday, it’s been a good season.”

Maids’ final league match in South West Division 1 will be away to the powerful Somerset-based outfit Bridgwater & Albion on Saturday, April 23.
Bridgy are currently in the runners-up position and so will prove a particularly tough encounter to finish the season on.
However Edwards claims to be relaxed about the clash.
He said: “We have nothing to lose, so we can go down there and show what we can do.
“We’ve beaten them once, and there’s no reason why we can’t do it again.”
He added: “It’s the type of team we have to beat if we are serious about progressing as a club in the future.”
Maids beat Bridgwater 32-30 at home in December, just one of four defeats inflicted on them this campaign.

Maids’ potential friendly with neighbours Marlow, scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday), has been cancelled.

The Berkshire Cup final takes place at Reading Abbey’s Rosehill ground on Sunday, kick-off 2.15pm.
