Heads roll after drubbing (01.10.04)

MAIDENHEAD RFC coach Simon Edwards will ring the changes after his team’s 39-0 drubbing at the hands of Clifton on Saturday.
Edwards, not one to mince his words, was forthright in his central view that his players are good enough for South West 1 but just not ‘fronting up’.
He said “Clifton are a decent side but we made them look good.
“I’ve watched the video three times now and quite frankly we were inept.
“Our decision making was poor as was our one-on-one ball retention.
“We weren’t nasty enough at times and we looked like a rudderless ship.”
He added: “We must address this now, otherwise we’ll be in a relegation fight all season.
“We went up a gear against Barking, but now we have gone down three.”
Edwards’ son James is expected to come in at scrum-half tomorrow (Saturday) at Penryn for the injured Ben Ayres – who will be out for two weeks with a badly cut hand – while Mark Ruddick will start at fly-half if he has recovered from a groin injury.
Danny Martin will switch to full-back with Danny Walton and Dave Knight on the wings.
A boost to the side is the return of Jonny Hammond into the centres to partner Stuart Mackay.
But Edwards is convinced it’s the attitude which is wrong at the moment and that this must change.
He said: “Players thought they could come into this season with the same levels of fitness as last season and destroy teams.
“That’s not going to happen in South West 1.
“At Penryn the players must perform. They must want to win and show commitment. If they don’t start showing this I’ll walk away.”
He added: “We’ve had a tough start. The big games just keep coming. But Penryn, like us, were promoted last season and so this is the time for players to front up.”
However it was not all negative from the frustrated coach.
He said: “In one way we have been unfortunate this season in that five of our six leading points scorers last season have been unavailable.
“We have been playing without bullets, but hopefully these changes will go some way to sorting that out.
“And there were good performances on Saturday. Sean Swartz was man of the match. I could do with a few more like him at the moment.
“And winger Dave Knight was excellent. He was very strong, and I look forward to seeing him against Penryn as he should get more of the ball.”
