Edwards: 'We have finally grown up' (17.12.04)

ANOTHER impressive victory, this time away at Chinnor, on Saturday, moved Maids into seventh place in Division 1 and maintained their run as one of the form teams of the division.
This is in complete contrast to Maids’ opening to the campaign when they lost their first four matches after winning promotion from Division 2 East.
However now they look confident and assured, as coach Simon Edwards was content to admit.
He said: “We came out of Division 2 very loose, that’s the problem with that level. It has taken us a long time to turn things around, but now we have.
“We are tighter and playing with more control. We have grown up – all of us – and we’re a better team for it.”
Edwards was not at Chinnor on Saturday, but watched the match video and pronounced the clash ‘a classic game of two halves.”
He said: “We didn’t appear to turn up until half-time. It took us a while to settle and get used to their huge pack. But we did, and could have won by more at the close. We were twice held up over the line.”
He added: “The great thing about the result is that it maintains the momentum. It was an important win for us. Many teams will go there and slip up.”
Also of note was the performance of No.7 Will Lowden who re-joined Maids after trying out at Bristol Academy.
In fact he played so well, he was named man of the match. Edwards said: “I know he’s a good player and it’s good to have him back. He still has a lot to learn, but at least now I know he can play at this level.”
Slightly tongue in cheek, Edwards also added: “Allan Greene gave him the thumbs up. I’ve never known Greenie make up his mind so quickly about a player before. He must be honing his coaching skills.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) Maids entertain struggling St Mary’s Old Boys, kick-off 2.15pm, in a match Edwards wants to win by ‘10-15 points’.
