Edwards "spitting nails" at Maids (19.11.04)

MAIDENHEAD coach Simon Edwards was seething with rage during and after Saturday’s heavy defeat to Oxford Harlequins.
He said: “I'm taking no positives from that game at all.
“I've told the team, as far as I'm concerned it didn't happen.
“I'm spitting nails.
“It was the most inept, indisciplined performance I have seen in two years.”
Asked his opinion of the sometimes controversial refereeing, Edwards said: “No comment.”
But of the defeat itself he said: “I find it very disappointing that one person can have such a huge affect on a game.
“Having said that, we were awful. We never came out of the changing rooms.
“We missed numerous one-up tackles and gave away in excess of 20 penalties.
“We also allowed every scrum to be wheeled, legally or not.
“We had old heads in key positions who just didn't perform.
“And we can't just blame the ref. It was an appaling performance.”
However, he did direct some grudging praise at Harlequins, especially their talent-packed back row, describing their play, both legal and illegal, as ‘very, very cute’.
Unfortunately, the quality of their performance was accentuated by a relatively poor one from their opposite numbers.
Edwards said: “Over the last three weeks, in fact the whole season, we've been outplayed in the back row.
“It's an area I'm becoming very concerned about,
“It's something we're looking at in training, but we may have to recruit.
“But the problem on Saturday was that the front row didn't front up either.
“If you have that in any game you have a problem.”
The net effect was that Maidenhead’s much vaunted backs had to live off scraps.
Edwards added: “I felt for them. They didn't have anything to work with at all.”

Tomorrow (Saturday), Maids have a date in Bristol with St Mary's Old Boys, who are level with Maidenhead on four points, close to the foot of the table.
Edwards said: “It's make or break for both teams. It's a four-pointer.
“I'm just hoping we start the game on a level playing surface.
“We need to win and they need to win, and we have put that pressure on ourselves. I'm not prepared to accept a performance like Saturday’s again, and there have been changes.
“Allan Greene is captain this week and he won't carry any passengers.”
Edwards also spoke about his players’ responsibilities to the fans, who he felt were short-changed at Braywick last week.
He said: “We have a duty as a squad to go down there and perform for our very good and loyal supporters.
“They don’t deserve to see performances like that on Saturday. We will not play that badly again.
“We're going to get a win. I don't care if its 3-0 or 100-0,
“We're going down there to get two points.
“That's all we're focusing on.
“I'm looking for the biggest performance we've ever had from this team
“It's a quality outfit but you can't just talk about quality, you have to show it.
“Quality is no use to you if you're losing.”
