After the Festive break it's always a worrying time as to how many pies were consumed over the break and how little fitness was done. With a good strength side we came up against a resilient Aylesbury wanting to reverse the run of poor form of last year. Maids started well and got better, we talked about not playing 9 man rugby even with rain and wind looking to put pay to any kind of expansive rugby. Maidenhead looked from the start to put the ball wide and Chris Liptrot opening up with two well work converted tries. Then Karl Kempton in the centre bullocked over and the game seemed to be flowing our way, although Aylesbury battened down the hatches and came back to score and never gave up tackling and chasing to the final whistle. At half time Maids were 20 points to 5 up and came out wanting more. This half the forwards started to exert pressure from the set pieces, driving over for 2 ties with Piers sneaking his usual 5 yrd special (he claims it was 50 yrds but he has only ever run this far to get on the pitch as sub). The most pleasing factor of the result was that we worked well as a team, we knew when to stick it up the jumper and when to let it go to the backs, providing some cracking rugby for all, very pleasing as we talked about this style in practice and took it onto the paddock (horses??). Exciting times for the Maidenhead 2nd XV with another good display of team Rugby |
