Maids' spirit overcomes Aylesbury

Maidenhead Colts 25 v Aylesbury Colts 17
Sunday 4th February 2007

Maidenhead Colts had a satisfying win 25-17 over Aylesbury in the National Cup Plate match on Sunday.

Maids showed great spirit and were always in control despite a late rally from Aylesbury which made the score closer than in should have been.

In the first half Maids dominated the territory but failed to turn pressure into points spurning several penalty kicking opportunities for attacking line-outs. The sole score in the half came from an Alex Cannon penalty making it 3-0 at the turn.

Another Cannon penalty extend the score earlier in the second half.

Maids took their foot off the gas and Aylesbury had an extended period of pressure which finally paid dividends with a pushover try try from a 5m lineout.

That seemed to galvanise Maids and they struck back with a well-worked line out move from a shortened line-out. Chris Parrot tapped back to hooker Tom Morgan who passed out to Luke Knowles. Knowles was stopped short but Olly Styles quickly recycled, and Mike Skelton passed to Chris Adam who burst through the Aylesbury line to score under the posts. Cannon converted to make it 13-5.

Maids were now finding more space as Skelton, having a fine game at 10, put Cannon clear in Maids' half to score a converted try in the conner 20-5.

Aylesbury fought back again with soft try from a tap penalty 10m out with the conversion and a repeat of their push-over try making it 20-17.

However Maids continued to attack with some great runs from Mike Burnett and Jimmy Makumure leading to a further try from Cannon which sealed the game.

Maids squad:
Chris Adam, Max Bishop, Mike Burnett, Alex Cannon, Ryan Christian, Peter Gull, James Henley, Chris Holden, Luke Knowles, Liam Lynch, James Makurumure, Tom Morgan, Brinsley Munn, Chris Parrott, Marcus Shah, Michael Skelton, Olly Styles, Gareth Whyte.
