Thirds win in style against Oxford Quins

Maidenhead III 43 v Oxford Harlequins 0
Saturday 29th October 2005

A tantalising game of rugby was played between two of the top teams in the competition last Saturday. Maidenhead 3rds took on the might of Oxford Harlequins, winning 43 to 0.

After weeks of closely fought games Maids forwards took on the tightly drilled pack of Oxford winning the opposite feed twice in the scum and overwhelming the opposition in the line out with great timing and tenacity. This allowed the backs with quick ball to take on the ruthless ferocity of Oxford.

Showing skills that once blitzed oppositions in seasons past the backs used great running lines and team play to create opportunities across the park. Maidenhead ran over for six tries, converted three of those and kicked one penalty. The try of the day went to outside centre and debutant Tim Smalley, who beat 5 men with an exciting burst of speed and angles of running to score his first try. He then proceeded to kick the conversion with an innate ability rarely shown amongst thirds players. More than anything this was a team effort than a display of individual skills and this made for a special day for both players and spectators.
