Maidenhead Colts are still trying to live down the memory of their disastrous defeat in the National KO Cup against Oxford on a cataclysmic day in what has otherwise been a very fine season. Last Sunday at Braywick they gave game time to a 26-man squad against a well-organised and willing Henley Colts team, and came out winners by 64-10, scoring 10 tries. There was a degree of disorganisation since Maids changed seven forwards at half-time and played without either of their fine fly-half, Matt Wardell and Dayne Ferrar. Chris Adam, who stepped back from his normal scrum-half position, played superbly at fly-half with minimal background in the position. Also on sharp form were skipper Simon Standfast, who led and played brilliantly, with Adam Dean on the wing also on good form. Ben Sedler on the flank and Sam Brown on the loose-head, were among the most prominent in the forwards, with Brown galloping around the field and passing like a centre. Andy Mitchell was almost back to his best too. However, in truth this was a good squad effort in which everyone played a part, with Will Grant and Chris Richardson also making an impact despite limited game time. Joe Thomas confirmed his recovery from injury with two excellent tries and some storming running, while other try-scorers were Ryan Christian, James Emanuel, Andy Mitchell, plus Adam, Standfast, Dean, Standfast and Sedler. Dave Hodgson kicked three conversions and Dean and Richardson two each. Maidenhead now set their sights 100% on the BBO League trip to Chinnor on Sunday in the rare position of having almost all their 33-man squad available for selection and with a growing urgency in their bid to rescue the season by maintaining their BBO challenge.
