Maidenhead Colts are through to the next round of the RFU National Colts KO Cup, where they face Oxford in the round of the last 32. Maids will go into this match with quiet confidence, knowing how tough will be the Oxford challenge. Their thumping disposal of Amersham & Chiltern at Braywick last Saturday, by a margin of 25 -0, will also give them confidence, although some of the less happy aspects of the match will not be dealt with here. The only possible bad news on the playing front was that Maids were not able to cash in on their total second half superiority, since they did not allow Amersham one attack of note after half-time and although the visitors had a territorial advantage when playing downwind in the first half, the only time they really came close to scoring was with a penalty kick, which missed. It was 0-0- at half-time but Maids forwards lifted themselves and remarkable combinations between backs and forwards led to the opening score after continuous pressure, with Matt Wardle handling twice in a move and scoring wide out. Soon afterwards, the electric Sam Stefan intercepted and went streaking away to score, leaving the lone defender for dead. The pressure was now continuous. Maids made several attempts to batter over from close range, and were successful when Olly Styles crossed; Alex Cannon ran in a beautifully-executed try with two men spare outside, a score which showed Maids at their best, and then to rub it in, James Emanuel, at lock, went storming through all the lines of the Amersham defence to score. Maids squad: Cannon, Christian, Hodgson, Standfast, Stefan, Wardle, Styles; Brown, Shearer, Robinson, Plumer, Emanuel, Kempton, Thomas, Sedler, Hogan, Lewis, Richardson, Batten, Corcoran, Jones, Parrott. |
