Maidenhead RFC Colts' season kicked off on Sunday with the fourth annual Summerleaze Sevens Tournament. For the fourth time Bath ran out winners but Maidenhead were worthy runners up. Six visiting teams took part Bath, London Irish, London Scottish, London Welsh, Widden Old Boys and Chinnor. Following Cheltenham's very late withdrawal, Maidenhead showed their strength in depth by fielding a second side at short notice. The weather made it a long hot day for all the competitors. The first group match kicked off at 11am with Bath gaining a comfortable 44-0 victory over Maidenhead 'B'. In the same group Maids 'A' had a good win over London Scottish (22-0), triumphed in the close fought match with the 'B' team and ran Bath close losing 7-19. In the second group London Irish were the form team with victories over Chinnor, Widden and London Welsh. Second place in the group however was close, coming down to a decider between Chinnor and London Welsh, which Chinnor scraped by the margin of one conversion kick. The main draw semi-finals saw Bath past Chinnor and Maids 'A' win an exciting match against London Irish. At the end of a long day in the sun, Bath's fitness told in the final and they were comfortable winners. Up and coming England and Wasps' star (and ex Maidenhead Colt) James Haskell was the guest of honour. James presented the winners and runners-up trophies to Bath and Maidenhead. London Scottish took home the Plate prize. Maidenhead Head Coach Gordon MacDonald commented " We are very grateful for the tremendous support from Summerleaze and the other sponsors. The Sevens tournament kicks off the season for the Colts, for what will be an intense programme of matches in the OBB league and National Cup." |
