A Minute's silence

There will be a minute's silence on Sunday during youth section training in memory of John Hawes

For those of you who did not know John, he was the smiley, bubbly referee co-ordinator for the club who did so much good work refing matches and more recently organising and managing the supply of refs for youth section games and at the youth section tournament

Our thoughts go out to all his family and friends

Jean's Soapbox

The first fixture cards & membership cards were sent out on 20th Aug (to those members who had already paid their 2007-08 subs) so they had them before the first match of the season

At that time we had not confirmed that the Emperor of India restaurant would continue with the 10% discount for members. This has now been confirmed.

Youth Section News

At the Youth AGM it was decided that each Age Group would take responsibility for selling programmes, raffle tickets and merchandise at one of the Maidenhead 1st XV home matches, in consideration of raising some funds for their individual age group (ie each age group gets a percentage of sales).  This is how it works:

  • Each age group takes one league match day. That's 11 SW1 league matches for 11 age groups, U7 – U17.
  • Each age group provides ball boys and a mascot (for kiddies) if they want, but more importantly 6 adults to man: each door from the clubhouse to the stand; each ground floor entrance to the stand; plus each of the corners nearest the Stafferton lodge and the Braywick Road to sell programmes; plus (at least) 2 others (ladies?) to sell raffle tickets / merchandise / Guess the Score competition
  • Mini age groups U7 – U12 should be encouraged to take the fixtures against more local clubs and try and set up curtain raisers against their equivalent age group from that club. If they won't travel they should still try and get games against e.g. Marlow, Windsor, Phoenix
  • Junior age groups should each run (e.g.) a kicking competition on their match days, prize(s) to be arranged, to be run at half time. Spectators could be invited to take the boys on. To vary this we could go for a mass Youth section record breaking event at the last home game of the season
  • THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT - In return for their efforts, age groups will be given a percentage of the gate/raffle take to go to their age group. Any other fund raising efforts they wish to make could happen too e.g. BBQs. Until we sort out the clubhouse food I don't have a problem with that. It should improve the match day offer.
  • In the event that an age group can not or does not wish to arrange a fixture or event, the offer still stands re gate takings and based on response at the Youth AGM I would hope half a dozen volunteers could be found for each match day
  • Mini Age Groups could also consider what last year's U11s did i.e. traveling to an away fixture to play a curtain raiser on away soil and support the first team, creating a "mini tour". Dates are available now if anyone wants to consider this.

8th September – Reading               Taken by U12's
16th February – Cleve                   Taken by U11's

Please liaise with Gareth at gareth@theajs.co.uk or on 01628 632775 as to which dates you wish to support.

All those who attend the 1st XV matches will know, an entertaining afternoon's rugby is guaranteed, with the opportunity to pop into the clubhouse after!
