1sts Show First Signs of Recovery

Maidenhead 1sts 15pts Vs Taunton 26pts

This was supposed to be a drubbing of the already relegated Maids by the already promoted Taunton.

Well Taunton returned home licking their wounds slightly and realising that there is not such a great divide in quality between the top and the bottom

For one of the first times this season Maids not only did the basics well but also took the game to Taunton breaking their line on regular occasions and more than holding their own in the set piece

Man of the Match Ryan Long was a constant thorn in Taunton's side both in attack and defence and with the half backs working better than at any time this season Maids were close to taking this very prized scalp

Maids were only 6 points adrift with 10 minutes to play until Taunton's extra bit of class and substantial wage bill of took its toll

This performance must be taken forward not only for next season but also for the remaining games this season so that the summer rebuilding can start with confidence

2s So Unlucky in Defeat
Maidenhead 2nds 5pts Vs Esher 10pts

An intercepted and converted break away try was all that robbed Maids of a win against a very good Esher side

Although regularly under attack, Maids' defence was outstanding led by no.6 Byron Richmond who must have run several marathons over the course of 80 minutes and current Colt Tom Hudson ably supported him with tackle after tackle and great positional play to knock back time and time again dangerous Esher attacks

Maids' failing was only their inability to hold territory when in good attacking positions, but like the 1st team, this will be a major confidence booster and should be carried forward to the three remaining games

U14s Clinch Berkshire U14 Division 1 League Title
Maidenhead 21pts Vs Windsor 12pts

Maidenhead U14s were hosts at Braywick to a league side  from Windsor RFC on the weekend in pleasant weather conditions of sunshine. This was a crucial match for both teams. The result would determine which of these two teams would be crowned Berkshire League Division 1 champions.

Maidenhead  started strongly, applying pressure early, and enjoying the majority of the territorial possession until an underarm offload from the Maidenhead Centre was intercepted by the very fast Windsor winger known as 'KK'.

KK sprinted half the length of the pitch to touch down  under the posts which was duly converted.  KK almost repeated the feat a few minutes later evading the centres a second time before being driven into touch by alert flanker James O'Connor.

The quality of the Maidenhead rucking and impressive defensive work by the forwards and backs caused Windsor to commit numerous errors, resulting in Maidenhead securing possession through the scrums. Maids continued to pile the pressure on during the rest of the first half but were thwarted at critical times near the Windsor line by infringements allowing the opposition to clear their lines.
First Half Score:- Maidenhead 0 Windsor 7

At the beginning of the second half Maidenhead lost a second try through a very well worked move between the Windsor forwards. However, one of the features of the Maidenhead team this year has been the refusal to know when they are beaten &, crucially, Maidenhead retained their composure and shape. Within a few minutes, Maidenhead replied with a series of driving rucks that culminated in Rhys Rolle forcing the ball over the Windsor line for a try, duly converted by Lee Neale.

Maidenhead knew that they had the momentum, strength & stamina to gain the upper hand. Within 5 minutes, sustained Maidenhead pressure resulted in Prop, Jody Dance, receiving a ball out of a turned over ruck: taking a tremendous running line to cut through the Windsor backs, he powered over the try line. Another conversion by Lee Neale saw Maidenhead take the lead with a score of 14-12. With 10 minutes to go, Windsor threw everything they had a Maidenhead but, instead of relying on a defensive strategy, Maidenhead went on the attack and a wonderful display of handling through the backline delivered the ball to Jacob Farrel who saw a gap in the Windsor defence and sprinted to place the ball under the posts. The successful conversion widened the Maidenhead margin to 9 points and, with only a few minutes left, the game was all but won.

This was a game that required the Maidenhead forwards and backs to perform at their maximum potential and, without exception, every player delivered to secure a tremendously coordinated team performance.

The final whistle was met by delighted celebrations from the Maidenhead players and supporters but tempered with appreciation and respect for a Windsor team who had played valiantly. It was pleasing that such a big match was played intensely, yet with good sportsmanship evident on both sides.

Maids U16s Claim New Tackle World Record

The Nicholsons Centre at Maidenhead kindly acted as hosts to Maidenhead Rugby Club Under 16s last Saturday as they continued their efforts to raise funds for their forthcoming Rugby Tour to Argentina & Uruguay in July 2010.

The boys decided to "tackle" the world record for the highest number of rugby tackles in 1 hour. The official Guinness Book of World Records' record for this event outdoors was set at 4,852 tackles by two New Zealand teams from Wellington & Poneke

As there is no current Indoor World Record, what better opportunity for the boys to show off their skills, fitness and tenacity in the centre of their home town by setting one, whilst using the outdoor record of 4,852 as their target?

Passing shoppers were amazed by the stunning Argentinean Tango Displays presented by local Professional Dancer and Instructor Edward Tattersfield and his partner Lindi Köpke.

Abiding by Guinness World Record rules, two independent invigilators from the Berkshire Referees Association attended to measure the course and act as official counters whilst the attempt was both videoed and photographed.

With parents, friends and many local shoppers in attendance, Theresa May blew the whistle and 33 boys embarked upon this huge challenge.

The whistle ended the attempt at 13.15pm

Following verification of the "clickers" it was announced that the boys had made an incredible 8,762 tackles, nearly 4000 more than the outdoor record! The Guinness World of Records is currently validating the attempt

Red All Over
Maidenhead U16As 52pts vs Redingensians U16As 0pts

Supporters were treated to eight unanswered tries and six conversions for the Maidenhead hosts

Lawrence MacSwan opened the scoring after only two minutes, powering through ineffectual defence from halfway.

MacSwan broke through again and, brought to ground a metre short, popped to Daniel Andrews-Jones, whose charge was halted at the very limit.  Redingensians cleared but only into the hands of Leo Smith who crashed through more weak tackling to score under the posts

Soon DAJ raced through and away and fed Markus Olivier on the left wing.  Feinting inside and slowing, Olivier turned up the wick and burned up the outside track but was hauled down just short

'Ensians had their own best spell of play, moving the ball in the backline and always threatening when their left winger could get in the play. But the half was to end with a superb team try for Maidenhead, as the forwards worked through phases from the 22 to halfway, Luke Thomas timed the spread perfectly and MacSwan crashed through on Smith's short pop.  Olivier, looking for work off his wing, finished with brio.

The half time score of 21 to nil was by no means flattering, spectators sensing that Maids were not yet playing at full speed

The second period started with DAJ slicing through the Reds defence seemingly at will.  The rest of the team followed up, recycling well and punching holes, causing chaos and making a try for Jacob Sanders

Stand-off Leo Smith received the ball standing still at the Maidenhead 10m with his outside backs still lined up defensively flat.  With nothing much on, Smith just ran straight and hard, brushing aside the pursuit, and touched down under the posts

Redingensians looked demoralised now, and three more tries were to rub salt in the wound.

One match to go, Home Park Windsor on 18th April.  A draw would win the title but a hat trick of Berkshire Grand Slams is the aim
