U17s - Retaliation of the Highest Order
Maidenhead U17s 23pts vs Redingensians 0pts

In the changing room before the game, discipline and focus was asked of the U17s and that is exactly what they gave.  With Redingensians 2nd in the league behind the Maids they lived up to their reputation for off the ball shananagins and Maids could easily have got drawn into the melee.  But instead they retaliated in the best way possible by playing them off the park in their last league game before entering the playoffs

Ed Clarke (li'l) enjoyed a brace of tries (one from 5m and the other from 50m), Matt Poole yet again had an impressive game and nabbed himself a try in the process and Billy Evans impressed in the kicking department

With Maids down to 14 men after only 3 minutes for not being 10m at a penalty, it took them valuable time to get into their stride which most likely cost them a valuable bonus point.  However, although top spot is likely to be snatched from them next weekend, they go into the New Year looking forward to the playoffs and in good spirits as a squad.  Likely 1st playoff opponents - Windsor - YumYum

Under 13sB Turn the Tables on Windsor
Maidenhead U13 B's 22pts vs Windsor U 13 B's 0pts

Having lost the previous 4 fixtures against local rivals Windsor, Maidenhead B team faced a difficult challenge away to their Berkshire counterparts last Sunday although with Lewis Kiddell back in the ranks after a long lay off through illness, and virtually a full team to choose from, Maids were confident of an upset

The game started brightly with the well drilled Maidenhead pack rucking well, and turning over plenty of ball for the backs to utilise. The tone was set when in the second minute Alex Brown came up like a steam train and hit his opposite centre so hard the poor boy's father must have felt it. Maids were camped in the Windsor 22 and it wasn't long before their pressure was rewarded with a great forwards try. Explosive rucking by James Preston and Josh Rolls enabled clean ball for number 8, Matthew Martin to pick from the base of a ruck and drive through 2 defenders to score his first try of the season

Freddie Carter knocked over the conversion to give Maids a seven point lead. Fears of a Windsor backlash were soon gone when Maids took control of the restart and drove the ball back upfield into their 22. Due to terrible weather conditions, handling was difficult and both teams made errors meaning possession was frequently exchanged. However the Maidenhead scrum was functioning so well it rarely mattered what side had the put in, as the outcome was often the same and Maids finished the firtst half 12 points to the good

The second half started as predicted, Windsor came out spitting blood, seething at the result of the first half. The first 5 minutes were tight with both sides turning each other over and making some errors.

The front row of Ciaran Warner, Simon Bourne and Michael Matera were dominating the scrums and Maids were winning plenty of ball. Freddie Carter looked extremely comfortable at fly half and Josh Rolls was fantastic, clearing rucks by himself and always there quickly to the breakdown. After good driving by the Maidenhead forwards into the Windsor 22, Maids were awarded a penalty which was taken quickly by Michael Matera. It seemed as though he wasn't going to make the line, but supported well by his forwards, he managed to drive over for the third try of the game. Alex Matthews then gave way to Robin Byrne on the wing, and all the impact men were on.

Windsor were desperate to get themselves back into the game but time after time were simply running into a purple wall that would not budge. Tackling from Repetto and Kiddell in the centre was especially impressive. Maidenhead by this point had the Windsor forwards huffing and puffing, winning all of their rucks and most of theirs. With just a minute left in the game, a maul on the halfway line seemed to have been held up until somehow, fly half Carter came out with the ball and scorched in from 50 metres to make the final score an extremely impressive 22-0 to Maidenhead.

It was by far and away the best performance the B team have put in this year, and in honesty the man of the match could have been given to most of the side. However, after much discussion and deliberation, the award was jointly awarded to Harry Hoxley and Josh Rolls for their fantastic performances

A look at the history of rugby union (contd)

... so they compromised by  introducing a fourth three-quarter. Within two years Wales had introduced it at international level.

The New Zealanders were quick to see the advantage of having a fourth player in the three-quarters. Their solution was to pull a forward out the pack and put him between the half back and the three-quarters

Their problem was what did they call the new position. Legend has it that consent was reached by deciding that the half back was 4/8ths and the three-quarters 6/8ths, so therefore the new position must be a 5/8ths, a name that has continued to this day in that country (No wonder they can't win the WC again with thinking like that - the ed)

When fly half play developed they introduced the first 5/8th and the second 5/8th (Do All Black players do degree maths before they start playing the game? - the ed)

The forwards in the early days were just a mass of players, having an important role, but having no individual responsibility

When the scrum developed into the eight man unit it operated on the basis of first there, first down. From this came the formation of the 3-2-3 or the 2-4-2 scrum formations, both of which was developed in the United Kingdom, and it was from this style of scrumming that the term back row players first originated
