Not Such a Happy New Year

Weston Super-Mare 38pts vs Maidenhead 8 pts

After several very good perfomances at the end of 2007, 2008 started with the result reverting back to the big L down in the West Country

With several 'big guns' replacing those players that had done us so proud in the last games, there must be some serious thinking going on with regard to selection policy

However, the 2s and 3s continue their impressive runs and apart from doing themselves and the club proud, also give the 1sts options and strength in depth to get back onto winning ways, if only they are given the chance

With bottom of the table St Ives visiting Braywick on Saturday, jumping back to a big W should be guaranteed.  Make sure you are there to cheer the boys on

Maidenhead Thirds Try Fest at Slough
Slough 2nds 3pts vs Maidenhead 3rds 62pts

The game started with a bitterly cold wind blowing from the East. Rugby is not easy in these conditions, or at least it shouldn't be. How come then Maidenhead ran out winners by 62 points to 3? The answer is that Slough didn't seem to want to tackle anybody moving at more than a brisk walking pace and eventually after 10 minutes it dawned on Maidenhead that simply passing the ball down the backline and running at the Slough backs was going to produce tries. Plus a couple of push-over tries from 5 metres at set scrums. If only every week it was this easy, but then Maidenhead are top of the league

There probably isn't room on the club website to describe all the tries so let's just say

  • excellent jumping at number 2 in the line-out by Michael Anthony and by Johnny Wanklyn in the middle gave Maidenhead an excellent supply of ball
  • good work by the front five in getting two push-over tries in the first 20 minutes
  • long and safe touch kicking out-of-hand by John Sudbury
  • lots of quick turn-over ball secured by the back row
  • a couple or well run-in tries by Lester Martin (or was it three) after quick passing from the rest of the backs
  • a try of great rarity and beauty from Dan Robinson as the rest of the team looked on in shock never having suspected that he could trot that fast
  • Rob Wilkins converting 6 of the 10 tries for a success rate of 60% (which is the same as Johnny Wilkinson got in the World Cup and lots of yardage gained by taking quick penalties

The only thing that Slough bettered Maidenhead in was yellow cards, getting two to Maidenheads one. And one of those two was at the suggestion of the Slough captain. Now you don't see that very often at Old Trafford

All-in-all a good days work but away to Oxford Quins in a couple of week's time will be a different proposition

New Years Moan!!

Some people are continuing to abuse the parking at Braywick, with numbers of vehicles still parked on the double yellow lines and also in the WAMDSAD private car park.

Please could you all remind your squads (and parents) of the rules – there is plenty of parking available at Braywick without either upsetting other users or, much more importantly, impeding the access of an ambulance in the event of a serious injury to one of the players

Want to become a Referee?

Some of you may have seen John Ford, Training Officer of the Berkshire Society of RFU Referees, at the Club last Sunday. John was trying to encourage people to take up refereeing and promoting the courses available:-

3hr Mini/Midi introduction to refereeing
2-day Entry Level Referee Award designed for those wanting to referee at 15-a-side.

Please liaise with Dave Perry (
david.perry@ndirect.co.uk) or Billy Maclean (Williammaclean5@aol.com) if you are interested in taking advantage of either of these. If we have enough numbers we could organise something on a club basis
