Great day at the club

A big crowd was at the club on Saturday to enjoy the England Australia game in the bar and then afterwards watching the 1st team get back on winning ways against Bournemouth.

Nice to see a few old faces again, such as Peter Yates.  A true blue Aussie who popped down to the club for the first time in a couple of years.  Thanks for visiting again Pete, we hope you had as good a time as we all did!!  See you in 4 years time

The new stand up bar tables were also put to good use.  A particular thank you from Prinnie for adding the lower level shelf so that he can use them as well

Steve and Sarah Page were getting accustomed to life the other side of the bar - Unfortunately Steve lost his 'trainee' badge, if anybody finds it please hand straight to Steve (make sure you are on the opposite side of the bar to him when you do this)

See you all again this Saturday

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside

Unusually, there was a reasonable amount of our Celtic brothers supporting England last weekend, including a certain Mr Richard Melville Brown

Unfortunately, having arrived in France 10 days earlier to watch the Fiji game and expecting to watch Wales play in the knockout stage, Dickie's well laid plans were in ruins. Now without a ticket for the quarter final, his hotel booked for a week and his flight not until after the qtr final, Richard had the pleasure of enjoying the next 7 days watching the arriving English hoards and celebrating with them after the game.  I even heard a rumour that after 7 days with the mighty Red Rose army he went out and bought an England shirt and was seen proudly wearing it in the bars of Marseille!!!

Another good win for Maidenhead 2s
Bracknell 20pts vs Maidenhead 2s 64pts.

With only 15 players available including myself, things didn't look to clever and with the 3xv only having 15 players the club is very stretch to keep putting out this many sides.

The game started with the Maidenhead forwards making an immediate impression putting pressure on the Bracknell pack at every opportunity, before we really new what was going on, we had started putting the backs into running space and they were taking full advantage Phil Lee running over for a brace and Simon Carter converting every two on one that could be found on the pitch, as well as persisting with the metronomic boot from all over the park ending up with 20 odd points. The slight trepidation we felt at the pre match warm up was now lifted and the Team started to play, finishing the half with further tries from Mike Andrew, Nick Bailey.

The second half fair play to Bracknell they kept coming back and scored a couple of tries, which were a little fortunate, due to the ref not begin quite on the spot to see knock ons, the joy of 2xv Rugby. The Maids forwards started at pace and again the backs finished. As always, forwards win the game the backs determine by how much!! Richard Barber scuttled over from short range and Simon Carter continued to knock over the conversations from all over the park.

An emphatic win and pleasing because we stuck to the basic game plan and converted our chances as they arrived. We must have produced 10 two on ones and converted the lot, which makes the game a lot easier and shows training as a team works. Cup this week, so hopefully some of the 2xv will get to make the step up

Aldermaston 1st's 6pts vs  Maidenhead 3rd Xv 12pts

On Saturday the mighty Maidenhead Third team, fresh from a 5-17 loss to Harwell, headed west to take on the mysterious and radioactive men of Aldermaston

Despite missing a few key players, Maids were buoyed by the return of Al MacKewan, and winger Shane Watson.

>From the kick-off Aldermaston came out fighting, and
the first 15 minutes saw Maids pinned in their own 22 under heavy fire. However, staunch defense and some inspired individual try-saving tackles from Lester Martin and Dan Robinson saw the scoreline at halftime only 3-0 to the home team's advantage, despite numerous penalties and attempts at goal from both sides.

The second half started inauspiciously for the visitors, with their restart failing to travel the required 10 yards, however a much improved display of handling and some strong running, from the likes of Steven Bourne and Dan Robinson, gave the men in magenta 2 tries; the first from Lester Martin (converted by skipper Rob Wilkins), the second created by some strong forward play and a typical Lester charge down the wing, finished capably by evergreen centre Jan Weddepohl.

The final Whistle found the scoreline 6-12 in favour of Maidenhead (who now have a rest week before facing Oxford Harlequins at home on October 20th followed by a World Cup Final Party at the White Horse), and the Penn motor man of the match Paul Savage, for what was described as both stupidity, and sheer bloody-mindedness in playing on to the end of the match despite sustaining a sprained ankle early on.

Maidenhead Colts 36pts vs Amersham Colts 0pts

Last Sunday saw the Maidenhead Colts take on the Colts from Amersham & Chilton. This is always a keenly contested game at Colts level and our boys were looking to avenge a narrow defeat from last year

The A & C team had arrived early and spent 2 hours warming up before the game, whilst the Maidenhead team were not quite so keen to shake off the excesses of celebrating an England win from the day before (or certainly the coaches needed a kick start !!). With Maidenhead able to welcome back some boys from both the Colts and the under 17's from last year we were able to go into this match with a full squad

The Amersham team certainly had a few large (Sheridan like ) units throughout their team so as is always the case with Maidenhead (smaller) teams we were looking to move the ball at pace around the park from the off

This didn't happen for the first 10 mins as Maidenhead were drawn into a tough forward struggle and the A & C boys using Hernandes tactics to get the ball down the park. Eventually the play started to break up and Maidenhead were given a penalty on the A&C 10 metre line, which Ross Pepper quickly tapped and ran in untouched. At 5-0 down the Amersham boys gave it a really big effort to score but some fantastic resolute defence by Maidenhead just kept Amersham from scoring with some very clever 'held up's' on our line.Their inability to convert the pressure into points seemed to drain the Amersham boys of their confidence and they became clumsy in some of their play

Maidenhead were awarded a penalty in the corner and kicked for the line out. A great take and drive saw the forwards rewarded with a well rehearsed try.  Just before half time a good move down the right wing saw Ross Pepper once again out sprint the Amersham Defence for a try in the corner, this was brilliantly converted by Callum McKenzie

In the second half Maidenhead really took control and started to run the ball around at will. It was great fun to watch and Maidenhead's skipper James Henley took the opportunity to score a hat trick of tries with a great display of power running on the right wing. Maidenhead ended up winners 36 points to nil, their second clean sheet of the season
