Match report,
Maids 2XV v Ealing Development XV
Ealing Dev
brought 1 1/2 sides to Braywick for the first run out
of the season, this seemed a rather ominous start as
we were struggling with 13 players. This said we made
calls and mustered 15 to give them a game.
This fixture
was all about getting 80 mins under our belt and having
a run out against different opposition. The game was
4x20 mins periods. The first couple of periods
Maids were much the better side, our rucking and mauling
was outstanding considering we had not trained as a
team at all and had loads of new faces. We struggled
in the scrum but again this was somewhat expected with
no opportunity to practice, but the lineouts were a
revelation again, with Barbs hitting his man against
a very well drilled Ealing Side
We went into half time 7 -5 up which is an outstanding
effort with some great defence lead by Rob Hollingsworth,
Barber and Alex Kent in the forwards and Dan Evans,
Daryl Brady and Mike Andrew in the backs and some
good ball carrying from Jo Cooley. The inevitable happened
in the second half with no ability to sub players off
we tried and with Ealing Dev xv constantly throwing
on fresh legs we began to feel the pace. The most
pleasing thing was we never throw the towel in, we kept
working for each other and more than held our own against
an Ealing side with a good mix of young talent and old
heads.
In all a very
pleasing afternoon, lots to work on but the personnel
are there to work with and this can only be good
for the whole club 3,2,1st.
Final score
a very respectable: 11-27

3rds look good in pre-season
friendly
Maidenhead 50 – Aldershot
7
This was a game that Maidenhead
won comfortably, racking up 26 points in the first 20
minutes, and running out 50 – 7 winners at full-time.
Whether or not it was any indication of how they
will play during the season proper is another question
For the first 20minutes or so Maidenhead
simply over-whelmed Aldershot with a four try burst
all of them well worked and with good support play by
the backs and particularly the back-row
Then Aldershot seemed to wake up and after a scrum on
the Maidenhead line passed the ball quickly down the
line and with a try in the corner seemingly a certainty,
put in a forward pass. A few minutes later a quick tap
penalty by Aldershot found most of the Maidenhead team
half-asleep and only a knock-on kept another Aldershot
try off the score sheet
Then the score eventually came
when Maidenhead dropped a kick-ahead, which was picked
up by Aldershot passed through a few hands until they
went over in the corner. Normal service was then
resumed with two more tries from Maidenhead one from
open play and the other from a good rolling maul
from a line-out
The second half saw two more tries
but the play from both sides was getting very scrappy
and with subs coming on at nearly every stoppage the
game gradually petered out
Lots of good things for Maidenhead.
Excellent running from broken play, good support play,
line-out and scrums looked secure, pick and drives well
controlled. The down-side? Still an alarming tendency
not to commit enough forwards to the rucks and mauls
and occasionally too many people standing around
waiting for something to happen which against a stronger
team could prove fatal. Also there were a number of
occasions where at a ruck or maul with the ball coming
out on the Aldershot side the Maidenhead backs were
heavily outnumbered and only mistakes by the Aldershot
backs prevented a score
On balance a very good opening
performance. Wallingford here we come!

A look
at the history of rugby union
A new series
of interesting stories and anecdotes on how Rugby
Union has developed into the game that it is today
Let us start
with the writing of the the Laws
In the
mid 1860's the growing popularity of the sport
focused on the need to have a set of standard
rules that could be applied to all rugby matches.
With this in mind a meeting was held on the 26th
of January 1871 at the Pall Mall Restaurant in
Regent Street, London (England)
Representatives from
twenty one clubs were in attendance and these
clubs, eight of whom are still in existence, became
the founder members of the Rugby Football Union
The famous London club, Wasps, should also
be able to boast that they were founder members
as well, but legend has it that the person delegated
to represent them at the meeting arrived not at
the restaurant, but at a pub of the same name
Waiting for the other delegates to arrive he settled
down and had a few drinks to pass the time. By
the time he had discovered his mistake he had
imbibed (that means he was pissed) so much that
he was in no fit state to make his way across
town to the meeting.
To be continued......
