Maidenhead U16B won this match in the sunshine as easily as the score suggests. In the later stages of the game they put together some scintillating passages of play with forwards and backs inter-passing to score some crowd pleasing tries. The team is growing in confidence in each other and fitness clearly helps Maidenhead sides to win. After the first exchanges, Maidenhead were awarded a penalty 25m out in front of the posts. Ed Kaye took a tap penalty which surprised not only his own side but the opposition and he ran through three weak tackles to score by the posts. Scott Atherton converted, 0-7. Maidenhead made a nonsense of receiving the kick off but robbed the Aldershot drive towards their line. They passed their way out of defence but dropped the scoring pass in the Aldershot 22m. Shortly thereafter, though, they retrieved the ball from an Aldershot penalty, and spun it along the line for Greg McHugh to score in the corner. Scott added the conversion 0-14. Aldershot came back with a strong drive to score 7-14, but this was the closest that Aldershot came to upsetting Maidenhead. Play became scrappy until Maidenhead broke down field. Aldershot were penalised for holding on and the ball was run from the penalty. Ed Kaye popped up at the end of the line to score in the corner 7-19. The rest of the half was played in the Aldershot half with Maidenhead almost scoring again but the teams turned round with no additional score. At the start of the second half, the ball was moved from a line out to George Lewis on his own 10 metre line. He dummied and ran 60 metres to score. The conversion just failed 7-24. This seemed to give Maidenhead momentum and from the kick off, Maidenhead moved the ball through the forwards and backs for Greg McHugh to score by the posts. Scott converted 7-31. Aldershot began to tire and Maidenhead’s fitness began to tell. Their play became sharper and the forwards began to drive their opponents around in the loose. From a scrum, Maidenhead moved the ball down the blindside for Alex McCulloch, playing on the right wing, to score. The conversion dropped under the bar 7-36. Maidenhead caught the kick off and the forwards drove the ball into Aldershot’s half offloading to each other so that Ed Kaye in good support could make the final thrust for his hat trick of tries. Scott converted 7-43. From the kick off, Tim Cronbach wrestled the ball from the Aldershot receiver and drove forward. The ball was recycled from the ruck and there was swift inter-passing between forwards and backs that led to Matt Becksmith scoring on the right corner. Scott converted 7-50. Squad: |
