The opening exchanges of this game were played between the 10 metre lines, both sets of forwards feeling each other out. Redingensians then put together the first concerted forward drive which led to some resolute Maidenhead defence. Having absorbed the pressure, though, Maidenhead broke back into the opposition half, the forwards secured loose ball and the ball was moved through the threequarters. Dan Shipton cut back against the grain, sliced through the defence and although pulled down just short of the line, he offloaded to Iain Whiteford who scored. The score gave Maidenhead more confidence and the rustiness that had understandably built up in the long weather-induced layoff from competitive rugby began to ease off. From the re-start Maidenhead won the ball from a hard tackle and Callum Hull made a break through the middle. He was tackled on the half way line, but got his pass away to Jacob Sanders who galloped the rest of the way to score under the posts. Iain Whiteford was successful with the conversion to take the lead to 12-0. Redingensians came back hard from the restart, putting together some sustained pressure with two 5m scrums and a line out on the line. These seemed to have been repulsed when Maidenhead drove the maul to their 22m, but the Redingensians flanker rolled off the side of the maul and scampered over for an unconverted try on the stroke of half time. 12-5. Maids kicked off with more urgency in the second half. They drove into the 22 but then were forced back to the half way line where they were awarded a penalty. As Redingensians retreated, Jacob Sanders took a quick tap and ran through them to score under the posts. Iain again was successful. 19-5. From the kick off, Maidenhead received a penalty when Josh Edney was upended and Maidenhead were off again, driving into the 22 before being forced into touch. From the ensuing line out, Maidenhead stole the ball and made a break, with good handling from Dan Shipton putting Niall Collins over for an unconverted try. 24-5. The hosts were not conceding defeat as yet and shortly after the restart, the Redingensians No 8 broke away to score a converted try. 24-12. Maids now resolved to make the game absolutely safe and from the kick off, they increased the pace and ran with real purpose, driving Redingensians back into their own 22. There followed a period of play when Maidenhead nearly scored in the left corner (Sam McCarthy a metre short), the right corner (Sam again) and the left corner (Greg McHugh in touch at the corner flag). Redingensians tried to run the ball from their 22, but that gave Maidenhead one more opportunity. From an attacking 5m scrum, Jacob Sanders rounded off a memorable day by scoring his hat trick of tries, once more converted by Iain Whiteford. Final score 31-12. Squad: Callum Hull, Josh Edney, Hal Orchard, Calum O’Flaherty, Bryn Evans, Tom Allen, Aran Dolan, Ben Scolari, Chris Dow, Tim Cronbach, Iain Whiteford, Jacob Sanders, Steve Carn, James Hibberdine, Shiv Khindria, Dhruv Surya, Scott Atherton, Dan Shipton, Greg McHugh, Niall Collins, Sam McCarthy |
