U15s beat Bracknell despite mistakes

Maidenhead U15s 31 v Bracknell U15s 0
Berkshire League Div 1

Sunday 7th March 2010

A fresh but sunny morning welcomed Maidenhead U15s to Bracknell for their 3rd league encounter of the season. The Maidenhead side was buoyant and confident following an excellent performance the week before in a friendly against Harpenden. However the expected precision and control was lacking in a game marked by an unprecedented number of Maidenhead handling errors.

Much credit for this should go to the Bracknell side who defended with great spirit and commitment and no doubt forced a number of these errors. However, Maidenhead did have the upper hand and were still able to dominate territory and retain possession for long periods. The first try came after 7 minutes and multiple phases when scrum half Jack Hill sold an excellent dummy at the base of a ruck to scamper over between the posts. To everyone's surprise the easy conversion struck the cross bar failing to secure the extra points.

4 minutes later, tight head prop, George Dutton picked up a loose ball and rampaged through the Bracknell defence and managed to touch down despite the attentions of several Bracknell players. Then normal service was resumed from the usually excellent Maidenhead backs, when Kerins sold two outrageous dummy switches to canter in at the corner. The half ended 17-0 to Maidenhead.

Maidenhead's bonus point try was fittingly secured by Man of The Match, Jack Targett, who executed a perfect set piece move from the scrum to score a superb solo try under the posts. Bracknell then enjoyed a rare incursion into the Maidenhead 22m area and only resolute defence prevented the home team scoring. The Maidenhead backs then clicked again and Kerins delivered a precision long pass to left wing Emi Repetto, who finished superbly against his opposite number. Both second half tries were converted to leave the final score 31 - 0 to Maidenhead.

The self critical Maidenhead team assessed their own performance as 6 out of 10, but the coaches were pleased that they achieved their targets for the game. If they can make that many mistakes and still meet their goals then it shows the character of the side.

Maidenhead now look forward to their next two league fixtures against Old rivals Windsor and Newbury who drew 7 all in their match on Sunday. Maidenhead will certainly have to raise their game against these two tough sides if they hope to retain their position as Berkshire Champions this year.
