Maidenhead U14B's were hosts at Braywick to the U14 B High Wycombe RFC on a weekend where the rain remained thankfully absent, resulting in pleasant conditions with a slight gust. From the start of what would be a very physical game, it was clear that both teams were pretty evenly matched in both determination & skills. An early penalty against High Wycombe saw the Maids' team camped in the High Wycombe 22. A successful counter attack against a Maids' line out saw the High Wycombe pack make inroads into the half, only to be repulsed by some spirited defensive action by the Maids' backs. A number of fiercely contested scrums by both packs saw the play move between both teams 22's. However, a spirited break by the new winger, Diere saw him charge down the left wing, deftly avoiding the High Wycombe defence and scoring a try. This was converted by the Maids' fly-half Patrick Bart. High Wycombe allowed Maids only a short time to savour victory. A sustained attack on the Maidenhead defence allowed them to get dangerously close to the try line. A short time later, a scrum in Maids' territory allowed High Wycombe to consolidate their presence and force their way over the Maidenhead try line. The try was converted and High Wycombe were back in the running. A late break by Maids' Harry Arnold saw him coming agonisingly close to the High Wycombe try line before being repulsed by the High Wycombe backs. More fiercely contested rucks & mauls & a late penalty awarded against Maids saw High Wycombe dangerously close to getting another try. The attack was successfully defended by the Maids' backs and the half time whistle shortly after this allowed both teams a well deserved breather. The second half consisted of more of the same, fiercely contested scrums & rucks followed by spirited breaks by both sets of forwards that resulted in some excellent rugby. This war of attrition continued and unfortunately, despite some deft game play by the Maids' pack, High Wycombe managed to seize the opportunity and score two more tries. For once, the wind was on our side & despite his best efforts, the High Wycombe fly-half was unable to convert either try. The final score was 17 - 7 to High Wycombe. In summary, an extremely physical game which tested the metal of both sides and produced some of the best game play we have seen this season. |
