Sunday 11th October 2009

Maidenhead Tournament featured two under 14s competitions this year. Maidenhead Bs competed first against Weybridge Vandals, Cobham and Twickenham

MAIDENHEAD U14 Bs

Maidenhead vs Weybridge Vandals
With the tournament game format being ten minutes each way, the Bs vanquished their traditional slow start enabling flanker Charlie Thomas to open the account against Weybridge Vandals in the second minute. Pressure from Maidenhead's forwards in the Weybridge half forced the visitors to make errors. Weybridge retaliated by kicking up half the pitch exposing which was dropped and knocked forward by Fraser Basford playing at wing. A tense scrum resulted under the Maidenhead posts. Maidenhead's possession became steadier with Owen Langstone driving through the Weybridge defence to offload neatly to prop Jodie Dance who touched down. Half time score Maidenhead 14, Weybridge Vandals 0. In the second half Maids maintained pressure, taking possession and territory into the Weybridge half. Number eight Owen Langstone spotted a hole in the Weybridge line and went through to leave the score at 21-0. Weybridge retaliated pushing Maids back into their own half for the first time in the match but it was too little too late. The final score was Maidenhead 21, Weybridge Vandals 0. All the conversion points were kicked from the hand in front of the posts during the tournament. Fly half Matt Price kicked all the points.

Maidenhead Vs Cobham
The first few minutes of this game were tense but Maidenhead’s superior rucking started to make a difference and, as they got into a pattern, the dominant forward play drove the game deep into the Cobham half. Twenty meter’s out from the Cobham touch line the forward momentum switched quickly to moving the ball out through the backs. Quick hands fed the ball through to Elliot Rakkar-Thomas on the wing to score in the corner. Half time score – Maidenhead 7, Cobham 0.
The second half proved to be a game of attrition. Maidenhead continued to have the upper hand with the game being played for the most part in the Cobham half. However, full credit is due to Cobham for defending hard, and giving no quarter. With both teams defending tenaciously the full time whistle blew without further score being added in the second half. Final score Maidenhead 7 – 0 Cobham.

Maidenhead Vs Twickenham
Maids opened the account against a confident Twickenham team from penalty on the Twickenham 22m line. Scrum Half Peter Watt popped the ball to charging second Row Rhys Rolle who powered through a paralysed Twickenham team to score an easy touch down. The score remained Maids 7 Twickenham 0 until half time. An increasingly Twickenham, who had also won their games up until now were shutdown and contained by a confident show of tackling by Maids able to tackle hard on pitches softened by rain for the first time this season. Final score Maids 7, Twickenham 0. All conversion points kicked by Matt Price.

MAIDENHEAD U14As

In the Maidenhead A tournament held in a steady drizzle on the afternoon of the same day,

Maids played teams from Redingensians, Wallingford and Hinckley

Maidenhead Vs Redingensians
Maidenhead played their toughest match first against am impressive Redingensians side. In a match of attrition, winger Jacob Farrel was given too much respect and space, scoring the only Maidenhead try of the match. Redingensians levelled in the second half and then closed the defensive door on Maids. The final score was Maidenhead 7 Redingensians 7

Maidenhead Vs Wallingford
Wallingford proved unable to hold out against the assault, coming mainly from Maidenhead's back line. Tries came from Peter Watt, Lee Neal, Jacob Farrel(2)

Maidenhead Vs Hinckley
In the final match and deciding match against long distance visitors Hinckley Maidenhead As had to win to take the tournament trophy just as the Bs had done in their tournament a few hours before. Winger Jacob Farrel scored the first try for Maids on the left wing. Hinckley then broke and their left winger read the same lesson to Maids levelling the score at half time. Maidenhead winger Tom Stileman saw space and weaved through a couple of challenges with centre Harry Arnold on his shoulder. Stileman touched down in the corner to score what turned out to be the winning try.

Maidenhead As were:
Harry Keeley, Hamish Rosser, George Kingsley, Michael McPherson, Lewis Morgan, James O'Connor, Callum Burston, Lee Neale, Jacob Farrel, Tom Stileman, Arron Wetton, Harry Arnold, Raman Sehota, Owen Langstone, Max Barnes, Simon Graham, Matt Price, Jody Dance, Chris Hudson, Elliot Rakkar-Thomas, Peter Watt, Rhys Rolle.

This Sunday turned out to be a special day. Never before have both teams in this age group both won their tournaments at the same event. All the teams and supporters were very pleased that this took place at Fortress Braywick.
