U12s' competitive performance against Wallingford

Sunday 14th March 2010

U12 A's 10 - Wallingford A's 10
The A squad showed how much they have progressed by putting in a highly competitive performance in a very tight and closely contested game. Having been beaten 10-0 in a game at the start of the season in 7 mins, Maids were determined to show their improved defence which has only conceded 11 tries in 12 games since Xmas. The scrum provided a solid foundation for good quality ball enabling Maids to dominate most of the first half, however they were stung when Wallingford strung a good backs move together to open the scoring in the corner. Maids responded by increasing their aggression and all put in good hard tackles, clearing rucks rapidly. This was rewarded with a well worked try for Ben Gordon just after half time. Unfortunately Maids relaxed and quickly conceded a try, but then put all the pressure on Wallingford as they battled for the equaliser. In the final play, the pressure and hassle paid off as Daniel Cutler was able to pounce on a loose ball over the line to equalise and restore pride. Notable strong performance by 'man of the match' Tom Kynaston, who showed controlled aggression, a great work rate and solid tackling ability. Overall an excellent team performance and it's great to see some of the things that have been practised on the training field coming through in to matches.

U12 B's vs Wallingford Barbarians
Without enough players for 2 sides, Wallingford played a mixed A/B team against Maids B's and the Maids showed great character and determination in a tough game. Wallingford won, but excellent performances were given by Richard Derry, Tom Judd, Ben Smith and Ben Gordon, the highlight of which was a charge down and try by Richard Derry, after the whole Wallingford defence had been put under pressure by some tight Maids' marking and hustling.
