U12s' strong performance in Land Rover Cup

Saturday 12th December 2009

Maidenhead RFC U12s demonstrated a strong performance in the London Wasps' Land Rover Cup event, hosted by MRFC last Saturday.

Maids - 20 v Eastleigh - 0
In their opening match, Maids delivered a slick performance. The opening try came from the favourite blindside move from the back of the scrum, with an excellent pass from Will Lawrence setting up Julian Guy to score Maids' first try within the first minute of play. This powerful domination continued with excellent teamwork from the whole Maids' squad leading to further tries in quick succession from Scott Prince and a great 50 yard run from Khalid Omar for Maids' third.

As the second half progressed, Khalid Omar demonstrated tackling with precision, bringing down the Eastleigh players with ease, this was supported by drilled defence by the whole Maids' squad and allowed Oliver Ward to break from the pack and score Maids' final try of the match.

Maids - 10 v Aylesbury - 5
In Maids' second match they faced a stronger challenge from Aylesbury.

Maids worked smartly as a pack, working hard in the scrum and ruck, pushing hard in the first half, which resulted in a clean pass from James Millwater to winger, Julian Guy for Maids' first try. Aylesbury pushed on hard and both squads delivered some hard fought scrums. Sean Makweche managed to break from the pack for Maids with a fabulous long run up the pitch to be brought down by Aylesbury just short of the try line, but Maids didn't give up, even as Aylesbury scored their try, with strong defending allowing Xavier Leadbetter to snatch the ball and deliver Maids' second try just before the match ended.

Maids - 0 v Brighton - 15
Brighton came into the match with a very strong and well drilled squad, who had easily beaten other teams in previous matches. Eventual tournament winners Brighton scored their 3 tries in the first half of the game despite Maids working hard as a determined squad to try and hold them back.

In the second half, after a motivational team talk from Steve Prince, Maids' Sean Makweche broke free for a run but was brought down again just short of the try line. Oliver Ward showed powerful defending and Julian Guy missed out on a try just short of the try line as Maids put even more pressure on Brighton, ensuring no further tries were scored and kept the score level the same before the final whistle.

Overall an excellent day for the squad, playing some of their best rugby of the season to date and producing the toughest game of the day for Brighton, the Southern regional champions.
