A much-improved performance on the previous week saw Maids extend their winning run to six games, comfortably beating Abingdon 2nds 26-0 to climb to second in the league table. Maids enjoyed territorial supremacy for most of the first half and opened their account when a neat inside pass from fly-half Dave Goodman allowed No8 Tim Anstiss to crash over from 10 yards. Veteran winger John Randall grabbed the second try, collecting a superb cross-field kick from full-back Rick Thorley before chipping over his opposing winger and winning the race to touch down in the corner. Centre Jan Weddepohl added the third try before the break, his elusive running leaving several Abingdon players floundering in his wake. The visitors enjoyed a strong spell after the break, but Maids showed their defensive qualities to weather the storm and spend much of the remainder of the game camped in the Abingdon half. A couple of good chances went begging before Maids got back on the scoresheet through Andy Raj. The flanker was first to react when the ball squirted out of a scrum close to the Abingson line, touching down under the posts, leaving Goodman to add his third conversion to seal victory. Scorers |
