A controversial second-half penalty try robbed Maids of victory in a hard-fought encounter at home to Slough 2nds. Maids edged the first half, but were unable to breach the visitors' defence and had to settle for a Dave Goodman penalty to give them a slender 3-0 lead at the break. Slough threatened sporadically in the second period but Maids still held the upper hand until Ricky Kahn went off his feet at a ruck in the Maids' 22 and the referee awarded a penalty try despite a Slough score being far from certain. Maids responded valiantly and spent much of the closing stages in the Slough 22. The visitors conceded a string of penalties as they defended for all they were worth. Maids opted for repeated scrums as they searched for the winning try but a couple of silly handling errors ultimately left them empty-handed. Maids scorers: Pen: Dave Goodman |
