Maids show last season form against Bicester

Maidenhead III 45

Bicester II 10

Saturday 12th December 2009

This was like watching a re-run of most of the games that Maidenhead played last season.

Plenty of ball for the backs to run with, good backing up play, solid play from the forwards, even a classic Lester Martin try right at the end, a yellow card and a cricket score. There were some differences however. Bicester turned up late due to the M40 being closed, they only had 14 men, and Maidenhead got off to a flying start and went off the boil in the second half.

This thoroughly deserved win started with a Charlie Jarnett try then a Mike Andrews try to put the home side 10 - 0 up. Bicester did reply with a penalty but soon afterwards Paul Jones went through on the crash ball and cleverly popped the ball up from the tackle to Billy Evans who went over. Good try!

Then from a Maidenhead 5 metre scrum, awarded after a period of sustained pressure Billy Evans went over again. 24 - 3 to Maidenhead and the game was really getting away from Bicester, only for them to see it disappearing further over the horizon when Dave White scored an excellent solo try under the posts AND drop kicked the conversion!

The second half started in much the same way when Tony Rawlings drove towards the line and passed out of the tackle to Paul Savage who went in under the posts. The game then meandered through the gathering gloom towards the final whistle. In the meantime Maidenhead picked up a yellow card for stamping, which evened up the forward battle, but only slightly. Bicester scored a fortunate try and Lester Martin went over in the corner right on the final whistle.
