A bad day at the office for Maids

With a very strong and gusty wind blowing almost straight down the pitch it was always going to be difficult playing any sort of running game. In fact it didn't make much difference as Maidenhead had the wind behind them for the first half and still turned round 24 - 0 down and it was clear that they were going to be on the end of the sort of hammering that they had dished out to other teams last season. The reasons soon became clear as Maidenhead played in a disorganised and disjointed way that had a lot to do with players playing out of their usual positions, new players and a general lack of practice of the basics of team play. Needless to say it didn't help that they played with 14 men for 20 minutes thanks to 2 yellow cards. Therefore it was strange that in the set scrums and line-outs they were at least at parity. It was in the backs that time and again they were caught out of position or so heavily out numbered that the A & C backs were able to run through the gaps at will. To their credit however nobody "threw in the towel", but the pressure on the Maidenhead team was relentless particularly in the second half when they were playing into the wind. With about 20 minutes gone in the second half and the score 38 - 0 to A & C, what was a perfectly acceptable tackle on Gregor Nagele resulted in a dislocated ankle and a broken leg. Not a pretty sight. Because he couldn't be moved a paramedic was able to make him comfortable until an ambulance arrived 10/15 minutes later. The end result of this was that as there was no other pitch available and the ambulance was parked in the middle of the existing pitch that the game ended with the score at 38- 0 to A & C, a result which stands. An afternoon to forget. Man of the Match: Dave White |
