U8s at the Newbury Tournament

Sunday 19th April 2009

A cold start followed by some fantastic sunshine ensured that the perfect pitches at Newbury saw some wonderful rugby to round off another season.

It is fair to say that the U8s' Squad have made some significant progress this year having started off the season with a heavy defeat for both squads. Many of the players displaying great running lines, passing ability and support work.

The A team had a mixed day as they won 2, lost 2 in what can be described as one of the toughest tournaments of the season and experiencing the 2nd heaviest defeat of the season.

The team won their way in to the 3rd place Plate Final and did this by turning the game around. The last game saw a 5-5 in the Plate Final and a tremendous effort by the squad.  The Cup was awarded to their opponents and host team 'Newbury' following a try count back.

Special mentions go to Jamie, Charlie, Josh & Drew who all had great games and scored some wonderful tries.

The B team  played excellently, winning all their games to get them through to the Cup Final.  They displayed some real fighting spirit and great teamwork.

The team went all the way in their pool, fought to the very end in the Cup Final just being piped at the end loosing 4-6 to Hungerford. Another tremendous effort from the squad.

Special mentions for some excellent performances and play from Louis , Theo and Isaac.

Tired legs and exhaustion certainly played a part as between matches the little scamps refused to sit still and rest and probably burned themselves out rolling around on the grass! We will have to keep them in a pen next season!!

We have really appreciated the excellent parental support a these events as without it we would not be able to attend them.  It was a great team effort by all involved and your support is very much appreciated by the coaches. The support from all the parents and the players on Sunday was excellent to the end. It was a beautiful hot day and you have to take you hat off to these guys for persevering in the heat.

The new season will bring new challenges to the squad which many are looking forward. They are now champing at the bit for contact next season!
