Maidenhead U15 Bulls maintained their unbeaten record this season with a well deserved six try win over a spirited Aldershot and Fleet side. For the first period of the first half many of the Maidenhead players appeared to be asleep catching up on the fact that the clocks went forward one hour, and it took a great solo run from on form winger Dhruv Surya to wake Maidenhead up and score the first try after a period of time when Maidenhead struggled to put any fluid passes together. Aldershot and Fleet defended for a long period of time and looked organised until a break from Frazer Brooks was rewarded with a good centre's try. On a dry pitch with little wind the referee allowed good advantages and allowed the play to continue and again Maidenhead were rewarded after a powerful run and chase from full back Sam McCarthy who scored a excellent try near the posts. Iain Whiteford who had been unsuccessful with his place kicking with the previous two attempts finally found his kicking boots and Maidenhead concluded the first half 17 - 0 in the lead . After a stiff half-time talk a number of changes were made in the line up and Maidenhead took to the field with a spring in their step. One of the replacements at second row, Tom Allen returning from injury immediately showed his speed and direct running and stormed the Aldershot and Fleet's defence for a great solo try . The successful conversion by Iain Whiteford increased the score to 24 – 0. Maidenhead eventually started to play the open expansive rugby that has been key to their successful play this season with the forwards creating good platforms for the agile backs to run at the opposition. From one of the scrums the ball was passed along the line to winger Scott Gillan to run powerfully through the defence and touch down in the corner with 3 defenders attached to him . Iain Whiteford was unsuccessful with a touchline kick and Maidenhead went into the last ten minutes 29 - 0 in front. Aldershot and Fleet maintained the pressure on the Maidenhead defence and two good tackles from Scott Gillan stopped their advance. It was a credit to Aldershot and Fleet that they never gave up and were always looking to attack but just couldn't find a way through the Maidenhead defence. The sixth try of the day come from steady work from the pack which gave Jacob Sanders an opportunity to run at the defence from just inside the 22 and after a couple of side steps he crossed the line to score a another good try , Iain Whiteford converting to make the score 36-0 . The final whistle ended an entertaining contest and the referee commented at the end that all players played the game in the true spirit of rugby and that both teams were a credit to their clubs. Maidenhead Bulls now need to focus on winning the final scheduled game in a couple of weeks with Tring before the end of season tour to the west country . Forwards: Backs: |
