Maidenhead U15 B Squad made the long trek into deepest Hertfordshire for the last match of their season to play Tring. Despite missing a number of players at very short notice, it was Maidenhead who started the brighter with some good attacking play although this was interrupted by the sad loss of Niall Collins with a shoulder injury just minutes into the game. Maids’ first try came after 10 minutes play with quick ball from a ruck just inside Tring's half - fullback Sam McCarthy sped into the line and had the pace to round Tring's defence to score in the corner. Tring came straight back into the game and forced Maidenhead to defend their line for a sustained period - some good tackling from Dhruv Surya and flankers Simon Crosbie and Rich Sullivan-Paul kept Tring at bay however eventually Maidenhead backs were caught offside and from the resulting close range penalty, a Tring forward crashed through some poor defensive tackles to score an unconverted try. Maidenhead's second try was an exact repeat of their first - same ruck position, same quick hands through the backs with Sam McCarthy scoring his second try in the same position. With half time approaching and neither side dominating, it was only fair that the sides turned around on equal terms - from a 5M scrum, Tring's No.8 broke from the back of the scrum and evaded several despairing tackles to score - 10 points all. Tring's halftime talk had more effect on the players than that from Maidenhead - within 10 minutes of the restart, Tring had scored 2 converted tries - slow reactions and poor tackling were the cause. However Maidenhead soon picked up the pace and camped themselves in Tring's 22m area. Some good defence kept Maidenhead at bay however from a defensive scrum, hooker Danny Keir struck against the head and No. 8 Iain Whiteford crashed over to score and then convert his own try. Instead of maintaining attacking pressure, Maidenhead immediately lost focus and from the kickoff, Tring turned over easy possession and made quick progress down the pitch to score a try. Stung by this turnaround, Maidenhead played some forceful attacking rugby trying to get back into the game and a strong run by Tom Allen was rewarded by a try with Iain Whiteford converting. Maidenhead maintained the pressure after the restart and came close to scoring several times, however Tring's defence held firm and time ran out on Maidenhead. Final score : Tring 29 Maidenhead B 24 This was the B squad's first loss of the season - irrespective, all players who have played a part in this very successful season deserve praise for the standard of rugby and team spirit they have maintained throughout - well done to all.
