Maidenhead Under 15s took on the mighty Sutton & Epsom last Sunday and two tremendous games took place. The Bulls squad took the plaudits for a fabulous team display, where they put all their hard training ground work into practice on the pitch and left Sutton & Epsom, who don’t lose very often, scratching their heads and pointless. The whole squad contributed enormously, but the back row combination of Iain Whiteford, Mike Winter and Jacob Sanders, and the 9 – 12 trio of Shiv Khindria, Fraser Brooks and Leo Smith together provided the fulcrum for their team. Try scoring honours were evenly split between forwards and backs: Tim Cronbach scored off a “bullet ball” straight off the training pitch to the delight of the coaches, Mike Winter, and Dan Keir from pick and go situations and Ben Scolari after a powerful run from 10 metres out; while for the backs Greg McHugh scored 2, one from the 22 and one finishing off a loop down the line, Fraser Brooks stepped inside the defence to score, and Sam McCarthy also cut back in to slice through the defence. Fraser Brooks added two conversions. Maidenhead Bulls - 40 : 0 - Sutton & Epsom B. With two more friendlies for the coaches to assess various combinations before the Berkshire League campaign commences, plenty of players are making a case for selection! The Stags squad took on a large, physical and very well organised side, whose pack was the best drilled this Maidenhead side have come up against. Unfortunately, in the face of the pressure this put the Stags under, our play at the breakdown and in the lineout was no match for the opposition and we found ourselves starved of ball. In spite of this we saw a tremendous defensive effort, and while Sutton & Epsom scored 3 tries in the first half, the Stags had rattled their visitors (who virtually never lose and apparently can’t find many clubs who will play them). It was a frustrated squad at half time, because we knew we could match the opposition, but we just weren’t getting it right at key phases. Some deep breaths, some stiffening of resolve, and another 30 minutes of great effort saw some reward through a great solo run from Markus Olivier to score out wide, and no further scores conceded. Final score Maidenhead Stags – 5 : 19 -Sutton & Epsom A All in all, a good workout against very strong opposition, with some good positives, plenty of lessons to learn and a few clear areas for improvement. |
