U14s' perfect morning against Newbury

Berkshire League
Maidenhead U14s 24 v Newbury U14s 19

Maidenhead U14s Rangers 45 v Newbury B 10

Sunday 14th December 2008

Maidenhead completed a perfect morning last Sunday at Braywick beating current Berkshire League champions Newbury 24-19 in the opening league encounter of the season. Maidenhead totally dominated the opening 15 minutes enjoying the majority of possession while camped inside the Newbury 22m line. However Maidenhead failed to convert a number of good scoring opportunities and against the run of play Newbury scored an excellent breakaway try. Colin Kerins equalised with a trademark outside run just before halftime, then converted to level the scores 7 – 7 at the break. The second period saw Maidenhead move ahead for the first time with a converted try again through Kerins. The visitors regained the momentum and scored a try but missed the conversion to make the score 14-12. Ollie Wilson burst through several tackles to extend Maids lead to 19-12 and with two minutes remaining Newbury scored a try under the posts that was converted to make the score 19-19. With seconds left on the clock 'Superman' Kerins completed his hat-trick with a run from the half way line to ensure a deserved victory for the home side. This was a fantastic contest between two very competitive sides and much credit should go to the Maidenhead forwards for putting in 50 minutes of hard graft to win a good share of possession for the Maids backs to convert into points. An excellent team performance.

Bradley Wright, making his debut as outside centre, scored a powerful double hat-trick. The game was quite even early on when Newbury levelled the try count after Wright put the home side ahead. James Preston put Maids further in front with another try. Bradley Wright was too strong for Newbury scoring three more touchdowns in the first half and two in the second to secure a convincing 45-10 scoreline.
