The U11 As played some of their best rugby of the year, but it still wasn't good enough to overcome Brighton, the eventual tournament winners. In the pool matches, Maids started with a well earned 5-5 draw against Wallingford. It was a tight game all through with both defences being tested before Wallingford converted pressure in to a drive-over try by their forwards. Maids came back in to the game later on and were rewarded in the final moments when they quickly spread the ball wide for Scott Prince to score in the corner. In the second game, Maids dominated Aylesbury for most of the match and were unlucky not to win by more than the eventual 5-0 result. The try typically came from a turnover and breakaway by Ben Lawrence, who offloaded to Shane McKenna who drove the ball on up to the try line before passing to Abigail Dow to score. An excellent team effort overall. In the final pool game against Wendover, Maids had relentless pressure for the whole game and had tries from Shane McKenna, Joel Greene and Will Lawrence all disallowed, all being 'held-up' over the line. But the point for the no score draw was enough to see them through to the quarter finals. It was there that they came across the elite Brighton team, who never really gave Maids a chance, especially as they lost the toss and had to play the match up hill. From there it was on to Wasps to watch their heroes struggle to a scrappy win over Northampton, but nevertheless, a good day was had by all. Well done to all those involved |
