Sat
18th April. MRFC U11A 40 - Olney U11A 5
Inspired
by playing on the 1st XV pitch in front of an enthusiastic crowd in
the grandstand, Maids under 11s set up the finale of the season perfectly
for the 1st XV by setting a high standard of play and try scoring.
Running in 8 tries in a one-sided match in which the season's hard
work came together in an impressive team performance in which everyone
contributed to the final score through their part in the creation
of the tries or in solid defence, allowing Olney only a consolation
try at the very end. Well they're not as hard nosed as the senior
players obviously. For the record, the try scorers were Julian Guy
(2), Scott Prince (2), Dan Cutler (2), Abigail Dow and Ben Gordon.
Sunday 19th April.
Newbury
Tournament
The B-team won the B's tournament and the A-team finished as runners
up in the Cup final against old rivals Windsor, so a very successful
day all round.
A-team
matches
Match 1 - Maidenhead 20 v Cheltenham 0
In their opening game, Maids quickly took possession pushing forward
with their first try scored after a great run from Julian Guy. Maids
continued to dominate the game with all players digging in deep, ripping
the ball and delivering 3 further tries from Dan Cutler, Ben Gordon
and an excellent long run for Alex Thompson to score the fourth try.
Match 2 - Maidenhead 5 v Widden Old Boys 5
The U11s second match was much closer fought game with both teams
playing hard with equal possession by both sides. Will Doolan managed
to push through supported by Maids pushing hard for the team's try,
but Widdon fought back to draw the match level.
Match 3 - Maidenhead 5 v Petersfield 0
Coming into their third and final pool game, Maids met equally strong
opposition with Petersfield. Despite a great, long run by Julian Guy
and drive from Umar Marriott, both players were unlucky to miss out
on tries, falling just short of the try line. However, Maids pushed
on as Ben Gordon was brought down after an extremely high tackle by
Petersfield, Maids were awarded a penalty try and won the match.
A's Group Final - Maidenhead 0 v Windsor 10
Having won both their pools, Maidenhead and Windsor A squads found
themselves head-to-head in the Cup final. Both teams played hard,
demonstrating determination and power to win the ball and push towards
try lines. Windsor managed to push through and 2 tries, but only after
being driven to the ground hard by Maids and having to reach out to
get the ball over the try line! An excellent final and the A's performed
well to receive their runners-up cup and medals.
B-team
matches
Match 1 Maidenhead 10 v Winchester 0
Maidenhead started slowly but very soon were in Winchesters half looking
threatening following a good kick by James Millwater. After some good
drives, Oli Ward managed to break through and open the scoring for
Maidenhead. In the second half Maids became more dominant in possession
and territory, and James Millwater sniped through the defence to score.
Match 2 Maidenhead 30 v Farnham 0
Maidenhead kicked off and managed to gain territory very quickly.
Oli Ward opened the scoring with a good run. Straight after the kick
off, Jack Turner made deep inroads into Farnham territory, before
Xabi Leadbetter crossed over from close range. Maidenhead kept the
pressure up until the half time whistle blew. Xabi Leadbetter opened
the scoring in the second half putting the ball down after a good
drive. Khalid then took full advantage of an overlap to cross over
for Maidenhead's 4th try. Tom Kynaston took the ball over the line
from short range after a good drive for the 5th and Tom Judd drove
through numerous tackles to score the 6th try.
Match 3 Maidenhead 0 v Topsham A 15
Maidenhead started strongly and looked a good match for the opposition
but Topsham seemed to retain possession of the ball better and despite
some good defence by Xabi Leadbetter and hard work by Alex Martin,
Topsham managed to score twice by half time. Maids fort hard in the
second half with some further good work by Connor, Tom and Sam, but
Topsham scored a further try.
B's group Final - Maidenhead 0 v Windsor 0
This was a well fought battle by two local rivals who both played
some brilliant rugby. Maidenhead seemed to be in Windsor’s half a
lot to start with but could not score. Jack Nicholls put in some in
some good work at the breakdown. Windsor nearly scored at the end
of the first half, but Jack Turner managed to drive the Windsor player
in to touch. Both Windsor and Maids battled it out in the second half
with some further good drives by Alex Martin , Jack Turner and Xabi
Leadbetter, but neither side could score.
Maidenhead
