Maidenhead RFC U8 As WIN the Shield Final Maidenhead RFC U8 Bs Runners Up in the Cup Final What a great way to say Good Bye to Tag Rugby……! Whilst Maidenhead U8 Cs battled through the thunder and lightning at Windsor RFC, the As & Bs were enjoying the sunshine and demolishing all before them (well nearly all) at the Newbury Tournament. The Maids U8 As easily won 3 of their 4 group matches against Banbury, Southend and High Wycombe, succumbing just to the Welsh boys of Pencoed. All was looking good for a group win until Banbury hammered a depleted High Wycombe, and then in the final group match overcame a demoralised Southend to overtake the Maids on tries scored – despite our boys’ cheers and support for the Southendeners! On the adjacent pitch, the Maids U8 Bs easily won their group winning all 4 matches against Aldermaston, Topsham, High Wycombe and Southend. In between matches the boys relaxed in the adjoining fields – unbeknown to them and their parents, which was according to the tournament host also the favourite spot for the local adder community! We decided not to tell the boys as it would have only attracted more! Time for a little relaxation and a few ice creams and burgers. These boys surely are finally tuned athletes! So as the Bs headed to their Cup Final on the main pitch, the As looked on, and plotted how to beat Topsham As in the Shield Final. Maybe a match too far for the Bs, or was it just the referee – suffice to say that even Stevie Wonder couldn’t fathom some of the blind and bizarre decisions that stunned our warriors. The final whistle went and we had lost 6-4 – but still there were medals and a cup to be had, and great memories for all. After that, Topsham As stood no chance against our As! So the As Shield Final kicked off, but maybe minds were still elsewhere. An error strewn start saw us down, but then some excellent recovery moves saw us level at 3-3 at half-time. Time for the boys to concentrate – only 5 minutes of Tag Rugby left. Things continued to be tight through the second half with things not looking good at 4-5 with approx a minute to go. But maybe this was when the nutrition finally kicked in – then 2 tries in the final minute..… As the final whistle blew, success was the boys. Everyone had contributed, and the team had won as one. Well done to all the boys and girls. Many thanks for an excellent season. We Coaches and Parents are all very proud of you all. You have developed much during the season, played and won some excellent rugby and matches, and along the way even occasionally concentrated and listened for 5 minutes! All looks well for next season’s contact rugby. It wouldn’t be fair to name and praise individuals as we played for each other and all won together. Coaches: Simon Bowler, Roger Moore, Andy Wells, Cameron Miller, Phil Melling, Mark Freed and Harvey Hughes. The
