U7s' good day at Basingstoke

24th February 2008

Despite a last minute change from tournament status to one off game Maidenhead took a good contingent of under 7s to play Basingstoke.

The morning took a familiar routine with the Basingstoke coaches organising a mixed training session for the first hour. It was good to see some new drills which had been introduced to the coaches who had recently attended a Level 1 training course run by the RFU.

The drills were focused on getting the kids to think about space, running lines and passing on the move. We saw some real improvement in these core skills over the hour so well worth doing.

After the skills session Maidenhead took on 2 teams from Basingstoke and produced a couple of fine wins. It seems we have a very strong group with some excellent team play.

The first game was won 6-0 with and the second 8-3 with tries from Louis Monk (3), Joe Griffiths (3), Charlie Scott (3), Henry Powell (2), Rhys Harper (2) and Drew Prince (1). Pace in the team is in abundance and it's good to see the improvement in running lines, spatial awareness and overall team work.

In this age group we are a real handful for any other team. With the London Irish tournament only a few weeks away this bodes well for the rest of the season.
