Well what a fantastic day! Maidenhead U 7’s came through in awesome style to win the tournament against some really good opposition!! The day started very early with registration at 9.15am and the first game against Amersham & Chiltern was not held until 11.20! – so a long warm up was needed. The weather was – at best – OK with splatterings of rain but when the action started it became apparent that the Maidenhead boys were on top form as we started with a comprehensive win. The boys showed great enthusiasm for all the pool games and we followed the 1st win with other resounding victories against Harrow, Saracens and Kingsbridge – who came all the way from Devon – blimey! – Kingsbridge did look a very good side with a number of strong Devon farmer’s sons, but the Maidenhead speed machine won the day and we were in the final! The tournament was played in two pools with the winner of each 4 game pool, meeting in the final. We were pitted against Hertford – I don’t know what they feed them up there but they looked more like U 12’s than 7’s and we were behind 4-1 at half time – All was looking lost but the boys never gave up, dug in and with some brilliant running got back to 5-2, – 5-3, – 5-4 and then in the dying seconds a masterful run from our own Billy Whizz - Rees saw us to an improbable 5-5 draw. The organisers decided upon a points difference count back and no one was sure who won until the awards ceremony where it was announced that Maidenhead had indeed done it!! A great day and great result for the boys who worked really hard, showed a great team spirit. Our rather relaxed approach to the warm up is – let’s say – different but seems to work! We should go on to the next tournament with great confidence. We are now the team to beat so be afraid opposition, be very afraid!! Super support from
the parents and well done Lynne for organising a great day! |
