The Under 15s were worthy runners-up in their tournament, narrowly missing out on top spot to local rivals Redingensians, with teams from Amersham & Chiltern and Twickenham also taking part. The opening game against Redingensians from along the Bath Road proved to be pivotal and the team went down 6.10 in a hard-fought encounter. Two penalty kicks from the ever-reliable boot of James Brooks, including a spectacular punt from over 25 metres, looked to have provided a platform to overcome Redingensians, who Maids have beaten in the league in successive seasons. But a try by Morgan Davies was agonisingly disallowed for a forward pass and Redingensians countered with strong Forwards play, wining turnover ball and coming out better in contact. Nevertheless, Maids' pack nearly gave as good as they got, with Michael James in particular impressive with his tackling and scrummaging. Maids put in a valiant display in what was the boys first competitive game of the season with a number of new faces getting used to team dynamics, but this time they weren't quick enough out of the blocks. Next up were a well-drilled Amersham & Chiltern side, but by now Maids were fully warmed up and got off to a flyer that made up for the earlier defeat. First half tries from the high-speed blur that is Thomas Simpson on the wing and an unstoppably determined Josh Turvey were added to by the hard-working Rory Creffield, making a welcome appearance on the scoresheet. A try-saving tackle by Michael Habgood highlighted the team's gritty commitment. Amersham countered with a couple of tries but were kept at bay by Maids, who extended their lead with a penalty try, awarded for a high tackle on Thomas. Redingensians could only draw against Amersham, but their narrow victory against the home team plus a win against Twickenham meant the silverware was theirs. Maids rounded off the tournament with a barn-storming display of free-flowing rugby that was a credit to the whole squad. Good support work, quick hands and a real desire to play as a 15-man unit gave Twickenham little opportunity to break out of their half. Tries from Thomas (2) and Josh ensured a comfortable 15.0 win and was a great way to round off an excellent day's rugby. If they had started the tournament with this pace and co-ordination, the boys would probably have won all their games. Team manager Andy Evans thanked all the players for taking part and playing in the true spirit of the game. Scoreboard: |
