U13s' visit to Bicester

Bicester U13s 29 v Maidenhead U13s 22
25th November 2007

Maidenhead Under 13s took two teams to Bicester on Sunday to test the squad in advance of their first full Berkshire League game against Newbury next weekend.

Bicester remain unbeaten this year and have a fearsome reputation for tough and rough attacking play. In the first play of the game Maids got the ball quickly out to Outside Centre Colin Kerins who scored a superb individual try from the half way line within 15 seconds of the kick off.

Bicester didn’t know what had hit them and within 5 minutes were two tries down with Kerins putting in another superb chinking run past the Bicester defence. Maids fought hard in the scrum although they were totally outweighed significantly by the Bicester pack. Bicester fought back hard and scored a try from a well rehearsed set piece.

This was a bruising encounter for the forwards and Second row Adam Piper came off injured early which left Maids depleted in the pack. However we continued to win good ball for the backs and put Bicester under constant pressure. This eventually paid off with Centre Matt Balmer managing to get through their defence to score Maids' third try.

Bicester came back hard and had Maids pinned down on their own five yard line when Kerins managed to pick up a loose ball out of a ruck and scored a magnificent try covering the full length of the pitch. This game was an end to end battle and within minutes it saw Bicester straight back in to the game with their second try and conversion within the next play.

The squalling winds meant that only one of Maids' four tries were converted taking them into half time with a score of 12-22 to Maids. The second half saw Bicester attack with a vengeance and despite some valiant defending their forwards powered through with three fine tries leaving Maids with no response and a clean sheet for the whole of the second half.

It was a bruising encounter and a passionate display by Maids who simply ran out of steam in the second half. Final Score Bicester 29 – Maids 22.
