Once a year Hertford RFC host a floodlit tournament in the evening for U10, U11 and U12 teams. The rules state that the club scoring the most points wins. The other teams were Bury St Edmunds, Harpenden and the home team Hertford. This year's competition was held on Saturday 1st March. Maidenhead U12s first match saw the backs combine with Simon Graham and Aaron Whetton providing a platform for Chris Hudson to burst through the home team's defence line to score the first try. Hertford mounted a counter-offensive in the second half but couldn't push Maids back to their 22 metre line. The final score was Maidenhead 1, Hertford 0. Bury St Edmunds were next up but Maids had warmed up properly by now and took territory from them but failed to make a score in the first half. In the second half, Maids continued with the territorial advantage, immediately feeding the ball to Chris Hudson who scored easily. Prop Jodie Danze then drove through Bury St Edmund's line to finish the game Maidenhead 2 Bury St Edmunds 0. Maids started confidently with two wins under their belts against Harpenden. Winger Ruth Dow opened the account with the 1st try, followed by 2nd row Callum Burston. and centre Lee Neale making the half time score 3-0. In the second half Neale scored a further two tries to become top try scorer. Peter Watts added a further try to close the account at Maidenhead 6 Harpenden 0. The Phil Ranner trophy for the club scoring the most points across all three age groups was won by Hertford RFC. Hertford also won the Greenwood trophy for open and attractive rugby. |
